Disney to make new 'Star Wars' films

all the box office talk has made me oddly obsessed with gone with the wind making 200 million domestically in 1939. its mind blowing. the population in 39 was only around 120 million and the average ticket price was 23 cents. so that means that a ton of people saw the movie multiple times. oh and it was still the depression. i read somewhere that seeing the movie was a status symbol that could be shared by all classes. it was rough but even a lot of the people truly screwed by the depression could scrape together 23 cents and then be able to tell everyone they got to see it and forget about their shit lives for a few minutes.

its fun to see movies like star wars break records but its dumb how they dont adjust for inflation. 200 million in 39 is something like 1.7 billion today. i just cant stop thinking about how amazing all these gone with the wind stats are.

As impressive as Gone With the Wind was, there wasn't any competition back then, except for theater. No cable, no Internet, no on-demand, no home theaters. Think about that.

that makes sense. but gone with the wind and snow white, both in the depression era 30s, were the only 2 movies to come anywhere close to 200 million. after gone with the wind the next movie to make 200+ was the exorcist in the early 70s, 30 plus years later. when the exorcist and jaws came around they started the modern box office mega hits we all know today. so from the 30s till the 70s there were still the limited entertainment options compared to today yet no other movie had any hope of matching those them in gross.

once again, im not sure why but im endless fascinated by this.

Exactly. You just can't compare among eras, inflation-adjusted dollars or not.

I think the best statistic (but one that is also not comparable across eras) is what percentage of the population sees the movie either in the theaters or in a short period of time (and I don't know what that would be) when released on DVD and streaming/on-demand. Sort of a "what percentage saw the movie when it was new" statistic, and the way people watch new movies today is either in the theater, or they'll wait for it to be released for home viewing to save some money and avoid having to go out in public. So if 50 percent of Americans saw Gone with the Wind new (which would be theaters only) and 50 percent see SW:TFA new (theaters or home viewing), then that's kinda comparable, regardless of how many Americans there are, or the value of the dollar.

looks like star wars was able to hang on to win another weekend with 41 million. happy to see the revenant with a strong showing in its first weekend wide with 38 million. best movie of the year!

No. Scars are in different places.

People are expressing their disappointment in Snoke but I have a feeling there's a reason he looks like he does. JJ gave a lot of thought to everything in the movie. Nothing else seemed half-assed or like an afterthought. I think there will be a compelling reason for Snoke to look like Gollum, and it's not because they're both Andy Serkis.

Did we actually see the emperor actually die in VI? Perhaps, like Hans Solo will in VIII, he has come back in a different form.
