As the weekend is approaching (an F1 race weekend - the Brazilian GP), it seemed like time to get off my ass and do something about it. I had already done the research, and this is what I found:

- Sling Day Pass, at $5, looks like the cheapest way to get a day of ESPN. However, for the race weekend, it's $9.99. And actually, this is a sprint weekend (a sprint is a short race held the day before the full race), so that adds Friday to the schedule of race events.

- I can get Fubo or Hulu + Live on a trial basis. But assuming the dispute lingers (like the gov't shutdown), there are 3 race weekends this month. So unless I plan to completely dump YouTube TV and change providers, I don't want to pay $60 or $80 or whatever for one of these.

- ESPN as a stand-alone stream is $11.99 or $12.99. But F1/Sky TV has their own service, F1 TV. And the mid-price choice, called F1 TV Pro, provides live race coverage for $10.99/mo. What adds to the confusion is that (as Wolf pointed out), F1 TV coverage moves to Apple TV for next year.

So, based on the above research, I decided that F1 TV is the least expensive way to watch a month of racing live. But I tried to find the F1 TV app on my TV. And it's not there. However, it said the ESPN app was free (obviously free to download, but not necessarily free to stream). So I installed the ESPN app.

After installing the ESPN app, it puts a QR code on the screen to activate, which I scan with my phone. Then I'm instructed to list my provider. Here's where I got confused. Normally, my provider for ESPN is YouTube TV. But that's not the provider for stand-alone streaming apps, like Netflix, or Amazon Prime Video, or (in this case) ESPN. Do I list Consolidated Communications, which provides my Fidium Fiber internet? Do I list Samsung, which provides the app library?

The main choices were leaning towards the big providers (YouTube TV, Comcast/Xfinity, etc.) so I just picked YouTube TV. And then it asked if I want to sign-in with my Google sign-in (YouTube is owned by Google). I selected that, and hit an "Accept", and I was in! Now, it's entirely possible that I'll be charged $12 or whatever on my credit card that's used to autopay the Google/YouTube TV service. I have not been charged yet, but perhaps there's a 7-day free trial period or something. I don't know. All I know is that I did not receive any contract agreement email, unless it went to Mrs. Scotch's email. I'll see what happens, but as of right now, it doesn't seem like it cost me anything.

Nice to see how streaming has made 'cutting the cable' so easy

We've gone from "You can have PBS, 3 shopping channels and the Spanish game shows channel for $10/month - OR - pay $190/month for every-fucking-thing-you-don't-want-and-that-one-channel-you-do" to "Well, sure, you were watching the Olympics on Hulu or YouTube LAST month, but THIS month to keep watching them you'll need Apple or Disney+ ... we all re-re-renegotiated."

I'm pretty tech savvy, but even I'm somewhat bewildered.

Perhaps I should look at it this way: I dumped the traditional cable TV service, with the set-top-box and all, because it was approaching $300/mo. (including internet). There's a reason it was $300/mo., and now we're finding out why. It's all the royalties, and rights, and agreements, and service fees. So now that everyone is barely making a profit, one price hike can put a monkey wrench in the whole deal.

!!! Clusterfuck alert !!!

Here's where we left off the other day: I installed the ESPN app on my TV, and activated it by selecting YouTube TV as my provider. It said I was all set. I was never charged, and I never received a contract.

Today is the first broadcast from Sao Paolo, Brazil; the first F1 practice session. I don't usually watch practice, but I figured it would be good to confirm that the ESPN TV app works. So I launch the app, and I select the practice session to watch. It pops up the message "Not supported. Your provider does not have an agreement with this service. You must sign-up for a Disney+ account".

OK, so I suspected I'd have to pay the $12.99 at some point, and this confirms it. I sign-up for a Disney+ account, and then subscribe to ESPN Select, which costs $12.99 for the month. I go back and forth between the codes on the TV and websites on my phone, but I successfully activated ESPN Select. So then I try to watch the F1 practice session, and it says I have to select a plan. Now I'm getting annoyed. I shut everything down, so that it would refresh, but I can't watch the program.

Then it slowly sinks in. ESPN Select gives me access to all ESPN+ programming. I assumed ESPN+ meant ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, etc. BUT NO!!! ESPN+ is some bullshit programming niche. It carries pre-scripted shows that nobody wants to see. It is not ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPN3. I realized I fucked-up, and just threw away $13 bucks. In order to get all the ESPN channels one would expect, you have to get ESPN Premium, which is $30 per month! Fuuuuuuuccccccckkkkk that!

I had to google ESPN's customer service number (they never put a phone number in any of the emails I got), and a nice girl refunded my $12.99 (up to 7 days to get credited with the refund!!!). She first tried to get me to go up to the premium service, but she was not pushy when I said no.

So back to Plan A. I signed-up for F1 TV Pro on my phone/computer, even though there's no app support for my TV. It cost me $10.99 for the month, and I can use my phone to cast the live coverage to my Samsung TV. I tried it. It works. What a mess.
Edit: I have an LG TV. I don't know why I said Samsung.

This is straight from one of those tech sites:

"However, despite the name, ESPN+ doesn't actually include access to popular ESPN network channels such as ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, and more. If you're looking to watch SportsCenter for instance, you'll still need a traditional cable or live TV subscription. ESPN+ does have a growing catalog of original ESPN TV shows, though, such as Man in the Arena with Tom Brady, Peyton's Places, ESPN FC, and more."

So ESPN+ doesn't include ESPN. WTF?

I just saw a thing where YouTube TV is offering $10 off per month for 6 months.
People say that it's for the loss of ABC, FX, & ESPN, but the description of the credit doesn't mention any of that. It just says you can save $10 per month for 6 months.

It's in the Options area of Your Account.

My account is auto-debited. So I don't know how I'd see that offer.

Log in to YouTube TV on a computer.
1. Pick the shopping bag icon at the top right header.
2. Pick My Purchases.
3. Pick Manage Membership

Pick Base Plan then Manage

Then you'll see the screen I showed in the post above that shows the get $10 off thing.

The credit available to me must have been some other retention based deal. Maybe they identify patterns for people canceling and offer deals to keep them on the service or something.

I couldn't see the Variety article due to the pay-wall, but I clicked the help icon in my YT membership page and I found this:

So watch your email for a chance to save some (in my case) extra cash.

I just received the email telling me about $20 off. It's a bit confusing though. It says I'll receive another email with instructions for applying a $20 discount to my account. Why can't they just credit me $20?

I got 2 emails about it this evening, but haven't had a chance to read them.
With this kind of thing they always make you do something and do it by a certain date.
They rely on people not following through or doing it in time.

Damn! I didn't even get a chance to sign up for the credit!

FX and Disney are already back. At the moment, it shows ABC as on-demand only.
This is good to see. I wonder how long it would have taken me to notice on my own.

Thanks Scotch!
