Concerts you have attended?

Just bought Goose tickets for October 29th in Miami. Should be a fun show. The more I listen to these guys play shows the more I love them. I know I have posts in this music forum from a few years ago about how they were the next big thing on the jam band scene and they have blown up over the past 2 years or so. Like Phish was the new Dead, Goose is the new Phish. They've played with both the Dead and Trey and plenty of other titans of the scene, they are clearly the new big thing.
You are correct, sir.

Did I mention Mankato has a thing called Ribfest? It’s a chance for these traveling rib makers to come to Mankato and have a festival for ribs. There’s also a concert each day, from Thursday thru Sunday.

A couple years ago I got to go for the first time. Warrant and Lita Ford performed. I stayed for Lita Ford, but I left before Warrant came out.

This year, the Gin Blossoms are headlining the 8/3 concert, along with Toad the Wet Sprocket and Vertical Horizon.

Hahaha. I could totally be a Ribhead.

That's a pretty good lineup for a little town like that.

X would be a good one to see. I'm with Scotch. How were they?
Friggin' great, actually. I was surprised how high energy the show was, considering they all have to be in their 70's at this point. And more musically diverse than I expected - they had a "mellow" segment in the middle of the show where another guy came in to play drums while the usual drummer ( DJ Bonebrake ) hopped out from behind the kit to play xylophone. I know "xylophone" starts with "X", but I didn't see that coming.

Warrant and Lita are playing Toledo this summer and Gin Blossoms are playing our Rib-Off too.
They got the summer routing path worked out.

That's cool. They probably already played Detroit, but I've been too busy to make it up for any shows since Living Colour.

  • REO Speedwagon with Train [07/20 Budweiser Stage, Toronto, ON]

This was tonight. I went with my son. Good weather. Only slight annoyance with smokers tonight. However, piss poor planning. This was the weekend of the Honda Indy race here in Toronto. The track is right between the GO/TTC station and Budweiser stage and they do not have pedestrian crossings on the track. So it was a long walk around. Not bad going there as people were arriving at staggered times but a nightmare coming out. We went lazy and spent some $ and took a rickshaw in both directions. The billing should have been Train with REO Speedwagon as Train was the headliner. There also was a warm up band "Yacht Rock Review". The crowd was a mixture of older people like me and 20 and 30 somethings. While it was clear some were here for one band or the other, everybody seemed to enjoy both.

Yacht Rock Review

Setlist:
1. She's Gone (Daryl Hall & John Oates cover)
2. Sweet Freedom (Michael McDonald cover)
3. Kiss You All Over (Exile cover)
4. Ride Like the Wind (Christopher Cross cover)
5. You Make Loving Fun (Fleetwood Mac cover)
6. Brandy (Looking Glass cover)
7. Tropical Illusion
8. Africa (Toto cover)
9, Heart to Heart (Kenny Loggins cover)
10. Baker Street (Gerry Rafferty cover)

They did a respectable cover of all the cover songs. Because Budweiser stage has a curfew we missed them joining Train as second last song and doing "Hotel California" which they have done on other shows. While I would not go out of my way to see them, I enjoyed the show.

REO Speedwagon

Setlist:
1. Don't Let Him Go
2. Take It on the Run
3. Keep Pushin'
4. Live Every Moment
5. Tough Guys
6. I Wish You Were There
7. Music Man
8. Can't Fight This Feeling
9. Son of a Poor Man
10. Time for Me to Fly
11. Ridin' the Storm Out
Encore:
12. Keep On Loving You
13. Roll With the Changes

About 20-25 minutes before REO came out, the background music and video display board changed. Te music went from some unknown background music to Sweet "Fox On The Run" mid song. Then a DJ came on and was talking about how he was going to be interviewing an up and coming band with a new album "HI Infidelity" which he had an advanced copy in his hands. He identified the station as 95.5 KLOS. He proceeded to play music which was appropriate for 1981. On the video boards they had stuff like top sitcoms from 1981, top dramas from 1981, top movies from 1981, top songs from 1981 etc. I don't know if it was recreated or actual tape from that day. But eventually he talkes to Kevin who is arriving from a phone in the limo (if you can believe it). The DJ asks while they are coming up if he wants to play any particular song and Kevin tells him to let the needed drop anywhere on the album. Then as the DJ introduces the song, the band comes out on stage and starts the concert. It was a cool concept and that station played good music. I would have liked to have listened in 1981. Turns out it is a real radio station. Wiki link below.

The encore wasn't really an encore. They went off but then a video interview was played on the screens. Once it was done, they came back and did the remaining 2 songs.

I liked REO. This is the second time I have seen them. 2 years ago I saw them with Mrs. IRBS with Styx & Loverboy. My son commented this time that all their music sounded similar. He said he still liked them but was an observation. I had a tough time with "Keep On Loving You". They lyrics were very personal for me.

Train

Setlist:
1. Calling All Angels
2. If It's Love
3. Get to Me
4. Save Me, San Francisco
5. Meet Virginia
6. The Joker (Steve Miller Cover) (with Kevin Cronin)
7. Long Yellow Dress
8. Over the Hills and Far Away (Led Zeppelin cover) (with Pat’s son, Rock on vocals)
9. Play That Song
10. Parachute
11. Angel in Blue Jeans (With snippet of “Too Sweet” by Hozier)
12. 50 Ways to Say Goodbye
13. Marry Me
14. Bruises (With intro of “Seven Bridges Road” by Eagles)
15. Hey, Soul Sister (With snippet of “Come and Get Your Love” by Redbone)
16. Drive By (With outro of “Hey Jude” by The Beatles)
17. Drops of Jupiter

A couple notes about the above setlist.
"Meet Virgina" and "The Joker" were overlaid. He did a t-shirt give away in the middle of "Meet Virginia" and then Kevin came out and they did "The Joker" and then they went back and finished off "Meet Virginia". Hard to represent accurately in a setlist. Based on previous setlists we got jipped about 3 songs due to the curfew.

Coming into this I had heard of 3 Train songs:
  • Drops of Jupiter
  • Meet Virgina
  • Calling All Angels
I am not sure why I did not listen to more. I did not hear back then one I did not like. Mrs. IRBS also liked them partiularly "Drops of Jupiter". My son has heard of:
  • Drive By
  • Drops Of Jupiter
  • Hey Soul Sister
  • Play That Song
  • Save Me, San Francisco
  • 50 Ways To Say Goodbye
We did not hear a song we did not like. I also really liked the songs my son liked particularly "Play That Song". I will listen to the Spotify non-live version to see how they sound as recorded music as you can see he liked mixing in other songs and styles to each song. During "Marry Me" someone did propose and he interrupted the song to get it on video. Gave them free t-shirts. I smell attention stunt. During a couple songs he released some balls and balloons. Of course we were in the 400 uncovered section on the edge so we didn't get anything. It was a good show. I did have difficulty with "Drops Of Jupiter". I remember it as being a song I heard a lot while Mrs. IRBS ands I were dating but just checking it was a year after we were married. But very tied to her.

A good night overall. Next time, no concert during the Indy.

Upcoming Shows:

2024:

  • Boomstock (BTO, Sweet, Chilliwack, The Box, UB40) [08/24 Sobeys Stadium, Toronto, ON]
  • twentyone pilots [09/27 Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, ON]
  • Creed [11/27 Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, ON]

That's quite the review! It looks like it was a good time.
It's interesting that Train relies on songs from other bands so much.
