Concerts you have attended?

Not a concert per se but like one. I am going to see a performance by Rick Mercer and Jan Arden. This is a comedy event. I know Jan Arden is a singer but she has a comic side. Rick is one of the wittiest satirists I have seen. He used to do a weekly show which satirizing news of the week and also went an explored weird jobs in Canada. Tickets were reasonable.

Upcoming Shows:

2024:
  • Rick Mercer & Jan Arden [05/12 Roy Thompson Hall, Toronto, ON] (comedy show)
  • Foreigner & Styx [06/14 Budweiser Stage, Toronto, ON]
  • Creed [11/27 Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, ON]

I got off my ass & went to a rock show last night ( and man do I feel it in my almost 58 year old bones this morning ).

Saw local favorites The Whiffs ( highest recommendation for anyone who loves power pop ) supported by Sparrowhawk from Minneapolis ( I'd heard their record on Bandcamp & liked it well enough, but live they were great ). Long-time local band Nature Boys opened the show.

My first time seeing a show at Hillsiders, a new-ish venue on the Kansas side of the state line. Nice cozy neighborhood bar place.

Edit : anyone interested in hearing The Whiffs after reading the above can listen to their most recent album ( my favorite of last year ) here :

About 4 years ago, I was robbed of seeing him live because of Covid. I had to hold onto that ticket for probably close to a year before it was officially cancelled.

Tonight, it's finally happening. And almost exactly 40 years since the other time I've seen him ( April 1, 1984 ).
You still find a place that sells paper tickets? 99% of venues do it electronically only now.

I live a block & a half from the venue, so I just walked down & got my ticket from their offices on the 3rd floor of the building. They only charge a $5 fee, too - so I saved at least 10 bucks avoiding Ticketmaster. Here's one of the only pics I took last night ( there for a show, not to be Johnny Instagram ) : 1711201118154.webp

Cool theater! How was the show?
I feel very lucky to live so close by. We might have to move later this year, & it would bum me out to leave the neighborhood if it happens ( we've been here since 1995, in 2 different apartments ).

Adam Ant was great - lots of Ants material, which is fine by me. Not as big on his post-Ants solo stuff. I was underwhelmed by the English Beat as the opener...they had a hype man/co-singer that I found overbearing ( stop yelling at me to fucking "give it up" ).

My son is a twentyone pilots fan. They have a new album and tour this fall. They had a Toronto date which conflicted with a Blue Jay game we had tickets for. They had a date in Montreal 2 days earlier. This would have involved 3 days off work and a road trip to Montreal. They had 3 shows in Columbus, OH 1 week later. This would have made me delay my Columbus trip from end of August to first week of October. We decided to do the Toronto date and exchange the Blue Jays tickets for a different game. Least amount of hastle.

This show was tonight. It was reasonably funny but not something we would do again. It was the two of them reminiscing about their times on his TV show.

Went and saw dmb in West Palm last night with Pam. It was a really fun show and we had pretty solid seats. Pam is a huge fan and I'm a big fan too. I credit Dave with being my gateway drug into real jam band music. This was the first concert I've been to in a long while. Apparently I do stuff now. Go to Phillies games, go to Disney like every week and go to Dave Matthews concerts.

It was funny how most of the guys there were some version of me. Clearly people who listened to him in high school, around 40 now and dressed like we could all go golfing after the show. Ha.
