With complications on going anywhere with my son, my son will go with someone else to Fall Out Boy. It wasn't worth the extra work of finding an attendant for me to go. They are ok but more my son's thing. The rest we will make work.

Last week:

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss concert at Blossom Music Center canceled due to Canadian wildfires

“Due to the unforeseen and unfortunate impact of the Canadian forest fires on the air quality in the Akron and Summit County area, tonight’s sold-out concert with Robert Plant & Alison Krauss at Blossom Music Center has been canceled.

Live Nation, management, and artists made this coordinated decision in the interest of public safety, and in light of the Summit County Public Health statement, for audiences, crews, artists and all concerned.

I know so many of you are so thrilled about Nickelback. My partner and I saw them couple days ago with Brantley Gilbert and Josh Ross. Another great concert performed by Nickelback as I saw them for my fourth time.

I just added another concert to my 2023 lineups. I'm going to attend the Saturday show at Boots In the Park. Plus I heard on the radio this morning another group was supposedly added to Saturday show the country legend Brooks and Dunn.

I just attended this year's Upheaval Festival here in Grand Rapids. On Friday, I saw Dorothy, Lamb of God and Bring Me the Horizon. Saturday, it was We Came As Romans, Ice Nine Kills, Halestorm and Falling In Reverse.

Sadly, several bands did pull out. Asking Alexandria pulled out because the drummer broke his foot. Fair enough. However, they replaced them with the recently-reformed Flyleaf. Blah.

Tragically, the biggest upset was In This Moment pulled out at the last minute... because their diva of a lead singer's dressing room wasn't big enough. So, the audience was treated with a 16-year-old kid dropping the first minute or two of popular rock songs back-to-back. Oh, well. It gave me time to stand in the merchandise line for two hours.

That's disappointing.

Hopefully the rest of the show was worthwhile.

2 hours for merch is crazy. They screwed up big time with their setup if the lines were that long. They lost a lot of sales.

The rest of the show was awesome! It was one of the most-attended concerts I've ever been to. Maybe that's why the lines to just about anything were slow and long. But, you gotta give them credit. They even gave out free water to prevent them from turning into another Woodstock 99.

  • Foreigner with Loverboy [07/25 Budweiser Stage, Toronto, ON]

Saw this show last night. They had a 3rd opener. Derapps. They were unremarkable. Not bad just forgettable. They did a nice cover of "Ballroom Blitz" to close their set.

Loverboy was good as always. This is the third time I have seen them and the third time I went to a show not for the purpose of seeing them. They did the standard setlist:

1. Notorious
2. Lucky Ones
3. Queen of the Broken Hearts
4. Take Me to the Top
5. The Kid Is Hot Tonite
6. Heaven in Your Eyes
7. Lovin' Every Minute of It
8. Hot Girls in Love
9. Turn Me Loose
10. Working for the Weekend

Foreigner was also very good. I have to see if any one of them was an original member (ETA: Mick Jones -- the guy confined to a chair -- is the only original member). The lead (not original) mentioned he was 62 (one of the reasons they are saying farewell (allegedly)). He looked 50ish. They did old school rocker type stage moves and show. We enjoyed it aside from the drum solo. I hate drum solos. Waste of time. Setlist:

1. Double Vision
2. Head Games
3. Cold as Ice
4. Waiting for a Girl Like You
5. Dirty White Boy
(Begin Acoustic Set)
6. When It Comes to Love
7. Girl on the Moon
(Band Introductions)
8. Say You Will
(End Acoustic Set)
9. Feels Like the First Time
10. Urgent
(Keyboard Solo)
(Drum Solo)
11. Juke Box Hero (Kelly started song in crowd on special stage)
Encore:
12. I Want to Know What Love Is
13. Hot Blooded

The people behind us were assholes. They gabbed and chatted loudly through most of the show. They also pissed off the people behind them by standing during the show a subject which generated a whole bunch of chatter. But despite this, my son and I both enjoyed the show.

Upcoming Shows:

While this doesn't put me in IRBS territory, it's a pretty big day for me.

Went to this show (Aimee Mann) Thursday night. Great show! I was shocked to learn that she's 2 years older than me; she looks much younger, and sings pretty much like she did in the 80s and 90s. She's one of those artists that's very particular about her sound setup and professionalism of her band. In particular, drummer Jay Bellerose's resume of artists he's recorded with is like a who's who of the music industry, and it's fascinating to watch him replicate the studio sounds.

Her opening act was Johnathan Coulton, who is a really good and witty/funny singer/songwriter. He closed with a song about Ikea. Aimee joined him on a couple of his songs, and he joined her for a couple of hers. She talked about how they challenged each other to use ChatGPT to produce songs for the other one. The most pathetic of those was a tune named "Melancholy Melodies", and they had it mention her gluten-free diet.

The show was at The Cabot, a quaint little old theater in the upscale Boston suburb of Beverly. They have a regular lineup of concerts there.

Despite its consistent use as a concert venue, there's no parking. A seemingly random smattering of little parking lots can be found here and there, along with metered parking on the streets. So one drives like a maniac for blocks and blocks trying to find a spot. And despite the "upgraded" theater seating, our seats couldn't quite accommodate my 5'8" frame or 30" inseam without my knees hitting the seatback in front of me. So what I'm getting at, is that the likelihood I'll want to see another concert here has diminished. Oh, and she had to switch-out both a guitar and a foot-pedal that was shorting out. Not sure if that was a venue issue or a roadie issue.

Anyway, she did a wide variety of songs, from her newer albums, to the Magnolia soundtrack, to her earlier (and popular) post 'Til Tuesday work. She sounded like she always does, and played both guitar and keyboards (she played bass in 'Til Tuesday). The rest of them all sang harmony, and played whatever instruments were necessary to exactly replicate the studio sound. Very enjoyable.

I tend to think equipment issues are usually venue issues. We have a theatre here which is similar to the one you saw (Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts) a little non-profit theatre. It is a nice venue with great sound but it is run like a drama club. Before every concert they come out and thank the car dealership sponsor. While the sound there is great, they also have the most sound issues there than other venues. I think they make the artists use their sound board and maybe their sound guy. This likely leads to issues either with the sound guy or incompatibilities or issues with the equipment connecting to it. They do have roomy seats and is easy for my wife to get in/out. They also have parking although you need to get there an hour early to get it.
