Companies That Might Go Out Of Business

Good news!
Spirit Halloween will be mobile next year!

We're down to a couple of locations around here.
We used to go regularly, often after hitting the bars back in the day.
Haven't been to one in years.

Big Boy in general has been in a downturn for years.

Here in Grand Rapids, we're down to one sole location, and it's in a plaza. I was there a few months ago, and it was just OK. There were a lot of old folks there. It was also Monday Night Bingo Night, which says a lot about its customers, sadly.

I think they also owned a chain called Shoneys. When I was first dating my wife they were a great place to go and get a nice reasonably price buffet meal. Within 5 years the quality declined dramatically and then locations started closing. I am not aware of any locations remaining that I knew of but there may be one or two somewhere. I have no desire to find them and try them again.

In 1952, Alex Schoenbaum's five Parkette Drive-Ins in West Virginia became Big Boy franchises and rebranded as Parkette Big Boy Shoppes. {I will withhold my comment about the dumb word "Shoppe.") In 1954 the chain became Shoney's. In 1971 it became Shoney's Big Boy. In 1976 it dropped "Big Boy" from the name. At one time there were more than 1,800 Shoney's nationwide. Now there are only 58. This month they're advertising their "All-You-Care-To-Eat Christmas Day Feast." (I will withhold my comment about the dumb phrase "all you care to eat.")

Big Boy used to allow franchisees to use their name. In Ohio, it was Frisch's. Here in Michigan, it was Elias Brothers, who bought the company in 1988. In Shoney's case, they wanted to expand to other states that had their own Big Boys, which is why they dropped them.

BIG BOY IS DEAD!

Somebody had stolen one of the Big Boy statues in Toledo in 1995.
It was kinda funny. (I was at school in Cincinnati at the time.......I have an alibi!)

Steve Mandell opened the first Party City store in 1986 in East Hanover, New Jersey. At its peak, the chain had more than 900 locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico. After Party City filed for bankruptcy protection in January 2023 – its share price was 0.10 – trading was halted and its stock was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange.

We used to like hitting our "local" ( over 40 blocks south of our place ) Big Lots 2-3 times a year. I always called it the "garage sale store", because you never knew what exactly you'd find. And every once in awhile you'd really make a nice score. I dunno how many DVD's I bought there.

It's simply getting sad that more and more box stores are closing. Where I live, I have a Big Lots and Party City near me. A couple weeks ago a LA Fitness, which I see usually busy, just closed. A very old mall built back in the 70s closed a few years ago. Now finally getting torn down and being replaced with outdoor shopping, apartments, business, etc.
