I have never been able to understand the "Chano" nickname of Sierra's Barney Miller character. The word is a nickname for someone whose last name ends with "ciano," such as Feliciano, Graciano, Luciano, or Marciano – but certainly not Amenguale. The Spanish verb "chanar" means "to understand." "Chano" means "I understand" – but "I understand" is definitely not a nickname. I wonder if anybody ever asked Sierra to explain the name. If not, well, it's too late now.

I would have guessed he was deep into his 90's.
Second to both.

Mexican Formula 1 racer Sergio Perez goes by the nickname Checo. I don't know why.

Another Jew (Zeiger) who americanized his name.
Did he do it when he was trying to get famous or did his family do it when they first came to the USA. Both were common, but the Ellis Island name changes seem more acceptable to me. And didn't the officials do it for them a lot of the time back then? Like when they first got off the boat.

Fun fact: My dad missed Ellis Island by like 2 years. It closed in 54 and I think my dad came over in 56.

He acquired the name Larry King when the general manager claimed that Zeiger was too ethnic and difficult to remember, so minutes before airtime, Larry chose the surname King, which he got from an advertisement in the Miami Herald for King's Wholesale Liquor. Within two years, he legally changed his name to Larry King.
