As much as it pains me to say this, I believe you're on to something here. However they get these, when people share them, all that's visible about the linked article is the headline and picture.I assume they subscribe to a "this day in history" feed of some sort. They aren't reposting these as new events, just sharing something that happened on this day. Others see them and assume they are new events without checking the date.
