In 1958, the Record Industry Association of America began awarding gold records to singles and albums that sell more than a million copies. The first gold single was Perry Como's Catch A Falling Star. The first gold album was Oklahoma!, the soundtrack of the movie starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones.

In 1976, the RIAA began issuing platinum records to singles that sell more than two million copies. Johnnie Taylor's Disco Lady was the first single to be certified platinum, on April 20, 1976. "Never mind the RIAA certification," you say. "What was the first single to sell two million copies?" (Well.....somebody might ask that.) It was Paul Whiteman's Whispering, which was number one for 11 weeks in late 1920 and early 1921. It was Whiteman's first chart hit. He would have 217 more top-20 hits from 1920 to 1943. Sixty-five of those made the top ten and 32 went to number one. Whiteman's final hit was a new version of Whispering in 1954, with vocal by Dick Ridgley. It reached #29 on Billboard's Best Sellers chart.

In Mahogany, a fashion photographer meets Tracy Chambers in the Chicago department store where she works as a seceretary and reinvents her as fashion designer and runway model Mahogany, The plot is not as unbelievable as you might think. Diana Ross had studied fashion design at Cass Technical High School in Detroit. She graduated in 1962. She designed the fashions she wears in the movie.

The theme song, Do You Know Where You're Going To, was written by Gerry Goffin and Michael Masser and was first recorded by Thelma Houston. This was released as a single in 1973 in New Zealand. It was not released in the United States until 2015 when it appeared on a re-release of her 1976 album Any Way You Like It.

.........but there's probably a reason for this that's sentimental AND you've probably already told us the story behind it (and I've forgotten it)

Man card be damned, I honestly think this is a beautiful song.

It’s a production masterpiece, those strings, the piano notes.
Yes.

These are all my nostalgia picks. Songs I didn't particularly tune into at the time:

8: THEME FROM "MAHOGANY" (DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO) - DIANA ROSS
7: NIGHTS ON BROADWAY - THE BEE GEES

As part of my Music class in grade school, we sang this at our/my 8th grade graduation. Kinda heavy in that context...do I know where I'm going to? I'm fucking 14 - no, I dunno where I'm going to. High school in 3 months, I know that. Other than that, no friggin' clue. Leave me alone. I just wanna get outta here & go home in time for late night Cinemax.
