While I don't like the song particularly, I can't mark it as a bad. When my mother and I moved in with my soon-to-be-stepfather back in 1980, he would play the acoustic guitar and that inspired me to pick up the guitar. This is one the song he would play most often. When he died of cancer last year I was going through his phone and found a recording he made playing this just months before he passed. Even though he couldn't play and sing as well anymore, timing was off and such, it meant a lot that I could find it. Now I don't have to say "I wish I could hear him play that song just one more time."

Here is the long answer: You Light Up My Life was released August 15, 1977 and went to number one on Billboard's Hot 100 and adult contemporary chart in the United States and on RPM's Top Singles chart and adult contemporary chart in Canada. It was Debby Boone's first single, not counting Help Me Understand, a 1973 duet with her father Pat, and Your Love Broke Through (1977), both of which were released as promo singles only. There were two releases of You Light Up My Life The first, Warner Bros. 8446, was backed with The Boones' version of He's A Rebel, a Gene Pitney song which was a 1962 number-one hit by Darlene Love & The Blossoms (although the label credited the Crystals). The second, Warner Bros. 8466, was backed with Debby's remake of Hasta Mañana, a song from ABBA's 1974 album Waterloo

Billboard's annual list of the "Hot 100 singles of the year" is now based on the charts from December to November. Some of the lists in the 1970s, including the one for 1977, were based on the charts from November to October. Thus, You Light Up My Life, which was number one for ten weeks in October-November-December 1977, did not appear on the 1977 list but ranked #3 for 1978.

Marvin Gaye's I Heard It Through The Grapevine was number one for seven weeks in December 1968-January 1969 but was not among the Top 100 songs of 1968 – and on the 1969 Top 100 it ranked way down at #88! I am still trying to understand that one! Number one for the year was the Archies' Sugar Sugar, which was number one on the Hot 100 for only four weeks but spent 18 weeks in the top 40 and 22 weeks on the Hot 100.

Yes, and Tom Jones' I'll Never Fall In Love Again, which reached #49 on the Hot 100 in October 1967 and was re-released in 1969 and got to #6 in September, was ranked #8 for the year! The song was co-written by Scottish-born singer Lonnie Donegan, best known in the United States for the 1961 hit Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight? Donegan had 29 top-40 hits in the UK but his original 1962 recording of I'll never Fall In Love Again was not among them.
