Sir Duke calls Duke Ellington "the king of all." Jazz pianist, bandleader and songwriter Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974) had 66 top-20 hits betrween 1927 and 1946. Twenty-one of those made the top ten and three went to number one: Three Little Words (with vocals by Bing Crosby, Harry Harris and Al Rinker), Cocktails For Two and I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart.

Here is Mood Indigo (Victor 22587), one of Ellington's most famous compositions. Credited to Duke Ellington & His Cotton Club Orchestra – they performed regularly at the Cotton Club in New York City from 1927 to 1932 – this reached #3 in March 1931. The Ellington orchestra also recorded the song for the Okeh and Brunswick labels.
