True Love & Apple Pie, written by Billy Davis, Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway, was first recorded by Susan Shirley and released as a single on May 14, 1971. Billy Davis and William Backer then wrote new lyrics for a Coca-Cola commercial, I'd Like To Buy The World A Coke, set to the same tune. William Backer then wrote a new closing verse, replacing "I'd like to buy the world a Coke and keep it company; that's the real thing" with

"I'd like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
For peace throughout the land
That's the song I hear."

I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing became a #7 hit for the New Seekers and a #13 hit for the Hillside Singers in early 1972. Here is the song that started it all::

One Bad Apple was written by George Jackson. He also co-wrote (with Thomas Jones) Old Time Rock & Roll and recorded a demo of the song in 1976. Bob Seger had a hit with the song in 1979. Jackson's demo was released in 2010 on the album All Because Of Your Love. Eleven-year-old Aaron Carter, the younger brother of Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys, recorded One Bad Apple for his debut album, cleverly titled Aaron Carter and released on December 1, 1997.

Jerry Jeff Walker wrote Mr. Bojangles about a New Orleans street performer who called himself that, taking the nickname of tap dancer/actor/singer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (1878-1949). The song has been recorded by more than 180 artists including Nilsson, Harry Belafonte, Neil Diamond, John Denver, Frankie Laine, Lana Cantrell, George Burns, Nancy Wilson, Nina Simone, Charlie Byrd, Steve Earle, Sonny Stitt, Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer, Sammi Smith, Bob Dylan, Brenda Lee, Rod McKuen, Etta Jones, Esther Phillips, Robbie Williams, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sammy Davis Jr. and the Brothers Four. Here is Walker's original version of Mr. Bojangles, from his 1968 album cleverly titled Mr. Bojangles.

I was listening to this while we were driving around. If you listen carefully, Joplin's voice is just amazing. The character in her voice, and the nuance and emotion she puts into each phrase is what made this a hit song.
