I don't think they have ever made much money off of gas.
I knew a guy that owned a service station back in the early 80's. He said he only made a few cents per gallon back then. He made more from repairs.
They have this fact-check segment on the local news, and someone asked if it's legal to charge different prices for cash and credit. The answer is yes (of course), but they also said that when they discount cash payments, it forces the customer to go into the store to pay, increasing the likelihood they'll buy some of those overpriced items. That's what I always heard also, that and overpriced grocery items.
I have read a couple articles lately about the history of gas pumping in America. One on how the cleanliness of the gas station washroom was the selling point. And how the gas station owners lobbied for and got laws in 28 states outlawing self serve. Then in the 70s the model changed. The repair service which was their cash cow became useless as car companies required warrantee service to be at dealers. So they lobbied the other way. Now only NJ and Oregon are left although Oregon has removed restrictions in rural areas. Now they want self serve because low overhead and they make their money on grocery and convenience items. And the push to clean the washroom also became useless overhead. They have this fact-check segment on the local news, and someone asked if it's legal to charge different prices for cash and credit. That's for fuckin' sure. Seen plenty of evidence backing this up.the push to clean the washroom also became useless overhead.
Are you saying that Joe Biden is responsible for the messy washrooms all though this land? I never knew that fell under the POTUS job description. lolThat's for fuckin' sure. Seen plenty of evidence backing this up.
My theory is this:
1. Biden says "We're going to make the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes"
2. Wealthy oil execs say "Oh really? Well, suck on this..."
3. Anything happens in the Middle East that makes the news = license to SPECULATE crude oil prices MIGHT go up (this time it happens to be the Ukraine invasion)
4. Oil execs crank up the prices to make more profit AND make the president look bad (because the president, of course, has a little dial on his desk that sets the price of gas).
5. Oil execs make records profits (again) AND still find ways to avoid paying their fair share of taxes.
An example. US invades Iraq 2003. Soon after: "Q4 profit highest ever for Exxon Mobil" Jan. 31, 2005
