I don't know liters (or litres). It's 16 gallons. My previous 3 cars (going back 20 years) have had 12 to 13 gallon tanks. So I'm not accustomed to putting say 14 gallons into the (not quite empty) tank at once. It's not really 10 minutes, maybe it's 3 solid minutes. But usually it's cold out, and when I'm getting gas, that means I'm on my way somewhere. I'm always running late, so I like just putting in 10 or 11 gallons and going.

Also, my car is specified for 91 octane. I try to alternate between 89 and 93 on subsequent fill-ups, so I only do a half-tank at a time. The car will run OK on 89, but it's not as responsive.

16 gallon (assuming US gallon) = 60.8l
44l = 11.5 gal (approx)

Exactly. Who wants to stand around in the bitter cold, squeezing the handle on and off until gas spews out all over the car and my hands? What will that get you?

In all my years of gassing up and topping up, I have never spewed gasoline all over me or the side of my car.

1 us gallon = 3.8l
1 imperial gallon = 4.6l

Canada before we went metric used Imperial Gallons. I think the pints are different sizes and it cascades from there.

Half the time, just removing the nozzle drips gas on the paint. Perhaps you should make an instructional video.

So just so I understand this: "gas spews out all over the car and my hands" really means "the nozzle drips gas on the paint" in New England speak? I thought you guys just slurred your As.

I said that topping-off the tank often results in an overfill, causing gas to splash back onto the car and onto my hands. I don't top-off my car. Mrs. Scotch is the opposite, though. She prefers the tank to be topped-off at every fill. So if I can get away with it, when we're out together and I fill the tank, I'll stop when it clicks, and hope she doesn't complain.

But even though I don't top-off my own car, I still have to be careful when I remove the nozzle. Even when I try to let the nozzle drip into the filler, as soon as I go to put it back on the pump, it often drips on my car. And sometimes the whole thing has gas spray/residue on it. Best to wear disposable gloves. Or move to New Jersey.

Ok, you are talking about 2 different things. I was only ever talking about topping off and never having gas come spilling back out at me. That has never happened to me. But I only usually top off to the next even dollar (and the amount of gas is getting less and less as the price goes up). I know if I kept forcing it eventually it would flow out of the gas port but I have never pushed it this far.

But yes, it does drip and there is no way to avoid that.

When I was working at a gas station in the early 80s, it was a self serve. I saw a guy put $10.04 in his tank (I should mention gas was 34.9 cents/l then ($1.32/gal) so $10 was a fair chunk. He spent about 10 minutes lifting the hose to make sure he got every drop. Then he came in to pay (cash transaction almost exclusively then) and almost flew off the handle when I demanded the .04. Usually we forgave the .01 or .02 and if he had of been a normal human being without the hose dramatics or a cute female, I likely would have forgiven the .04. But because he did all that shit and came in with an attitude, he did not get my discretion. He paid the .04. I felt good.

I thought you were going to bring up the 1/10th of a cent. On 60 Minutes, Andy Rooney once pumped a gallon of gas and wanted his 1/10th of a cent change.

One time I put my gas cap into the pump handle so I didn't have to hold the pump (the doohickie that keeps the pump engaged was missing). The auto shutoff didn't work that time, so when my tank was full, gas starting shooting out of my car. I pulled the pump out of my gas tank and then I had gas shooting out of the pump AND my car's gas tank. In a matter of 1/10th of a second, my thought process was, "I need to get my gas cap out of the pump. I could drop it on the ground. But what if there's a spark? That will cause an explosion the size of Mount Vesuvius! But it might not. Better drop it and hope for the best."

So I dropped the pump on the ground. My gas cap popped out. The gas stopped coming out of the pump. It stopped shooting out of my car. I hung up the pump and drove off, and never looked back.

The first time I got gas is my ultra luxury 2024 Hyundai Venue I definitely got gas all over my hands and all on the side of the car. it wasn't so much a spray as it was a river. What was I supposed to expect? I've always topped off. So when the gas pump handle clicked that it was done I pumped some more in and it came out a little bit so I figured it was just a fluke or I did something wrong with a new car so I tried it again and that's when the river happened. I don't know about you guys but every time I've had gasoline on my person I get real worried about setting myself on fire by accident. I don't want to be one of those monks or whatever who do it on purpose to protest some cause.

Besides that one time I would say I've spilled gas out of my gas tank in any car, maybe three or four times my whole life and way less than what I just described.

I'll fill up till it clicks off, then give it one more squeeze till it clicks off a 2nd time. It never overflows.
If I can get an extra 10 or 12 miles between having to stop and fill up again, I'm happier.

I've only got a 12 gallon tank, and only have to fill up about once a week, but less time at the station is good.

Mine's 12 gallons as well. The car says I get 329 miles per tank out of those 12 and going to Tennessee that was about right but usually it winds up being around 300 or 290 per tank.

That's the joy of topping off...the extra miles. If you top off the right way you can drive about 60 mi before the needle moves. I don't even have a needle anymore. I've got this digital meter bullshit. I kind of don't like it. I want my needle back.

I can't say for sure what my split-second decision would be, but I don't think I'd just drop a spewing pump nozzle on the ground and hope for the best. Glad it worked out for you.

You can't spark aluminum? That's interesting and I didn't know it and it makes a ton of sense.

Now I kind of want to try though. I want to go take a soda can and like hit it with a knife until a spark happens. I don't care how science works. I can fucking do it. I know I can if I try long enough.
