When I was a kid, the dirtbags listened to Led Zep and AC/DC. My crowd was into Yes, Rush, Styx, Steely Dan, Chicago, and other sophisticated groups. But now it's ok for me to appreciate bands that just rock.

Early Radiohead was too teen angst emo for me, but they became one of my favorites with their more sophisticated albums.

Oh, and Rock Lobster was required playing at all the high school parties, so the B-52s were big.

I just remembered another instance.

I bought Devo's first album because I saw a picture of them in Starlog magazine and I knew immediately they shared a position on some spectrum with me. But when I heard their music it hurt my brain's ears. It was discordant and angular, and powered by a kind of anger I'd never heard in music before. At 13, most of the music I'd heard was from the radio. It took a couple of weeks of forced, repeated listening to train my taste, but it was worth it. Now it's one of my favorite albums of all time, and I hear its influence in a bunch of stuff that came later.

I'm not sure how this thread got abandoned for so long, but suspect it has to do with the threads we have for "songs you used to hate/like" being used instead.

Anyway, I was listening to "Brass in Pocket" by The Pretenders the other day, and I recalled how that was my introduction to the band. And I thought "What a lame song, what a lame band". I also thought the name "The Pretenders" was lame, like wasn't there an old band named The Pretenders already?

So this is what happened (in the US). A year (!) before the album was released, the single "Stop Your Sobbing" hit the airwaves in January of '79, with it's annoyingly repeated chorus. The next single was "Kid", another jangly throw-away rockabilly song. And that was followed by the hated "Brass in Pocket".

The album was finally released in January of 1980, and the AOR stations started playing "Mystery Achievement", a real rocker of a song. And then some stations would play the dirty, punky "Tattooed Love Boys", a real high-energy track. And finally, the awesome "Precious" was released as a single (but not in the US), however it was the opener on the album, so the AOR stations played that too.

Ever since then, I've loved The Pretenders.

I have not heard a Pretenders song I did not like including "Brass In Pocket" (Has a catchy tune. Haven't really listened to the lyrics).

Clearly, I'm in the minority, as it was a #14 hit on the US Billboard. It's just not my style. It's plodding, and I find the melody and guitar line annoying and repetitive.

As far as the lyrics, I find them annoying too. And bewildering - there's a line:

Got new skank it's so reet.

I mentioned this in one of the lyrics forums. I think Aaron knew what it meant.

We have discussed this before. For me, for most songs, the lyrics are secondary to the music (some exceptions where the lyrics make the song or the hook). As to the above lyric, the band is British so if they are speaking in their local tongue, who know what they are saying.

Same with me. My intro to music was instrumental rock, jazz, and fusion. And I played musical instruments at a young age, and participated in school bands, which was all classical and jazz music. There is very little vocal-oriented music I like, other than "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega. So, like you, I tend not to care about the content of the lyrics. I believe we've had discussions here where sadchild expressed a dislike of the subject matter and lyrics of songs. But not me.

But how can you miss this?

Gonna use my arms
Gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style
Gonna use my side step
Gonna use my fingers
Gonna use my, my, my imagination

and I don't like the way she sings it (the melody).

For me, I don't mind how she sings the melody and these lyrics do not bother me. But everybody has different triggers. I certainly am triggered by nameless horses. Sadchild by "Baracuda" lyrics.

I thought the name "The Pretenders" was lame, like wasn't there an old band named The Pretenders already?

There were four doo-wop groups called the Pretenders. The first one, formed in 1955, released seven singles – two on the Rama label and one each on Holiday, Central, Port, Bethlehem and Whirlin' Disc – and included Jimmy Jones, who would have two solo hits in 1960, Handy Man and Good Timin'. A second Pretenders group released I'm So Happy on the Power-Martin label in 1961. Linda & The Pretenders released It's Not My Will on the Assault label in 1961. James Moore & The Pretenders released To Be Loved (Forever) on the Tishman label in 1964.

Here is the first Pretenders' second single, Possessive Love, from May 1956.

These lines from of Brass In Pocket

"Gonna use my arms, gonna use my legs
Gonna use my style, gonna use my side-step
Gonna use my fingers, gonna use my, my, my imagination"

remind me of these lines from Nina Simone's early 1969 hit Ain't Got No, I Got Life):

"I got my hair, got my head
Got my brains, got my ears
Got my eyes, got my nose
Got my mouth. I got my smile
I got my tongue, got my chin
Got my neck, got my boobies"

I didn't like the Pretenders back in the 80's, but do now.

I've tipped the scales on The Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, and the Cure are a few that come to mind.

There are a good number of bands the FM radio has wrecked for me:
Skynyrd
AC/DC
The Who
Seger
and more greats from that era.

FM usually thinks that those bands only have 3 songs each, and that they need to one of them each hour forever.

There are only so many times I can hear Freebird before I want to take three steps toward the railroad tracks and lay my head down on the rail.

Variety would saved them for me.

I posted this when the thread started. To clarify, while the dirtbags liked Zeppelin, I also always liked them. Led Zep II was one of the albums my brother bought, back in the day. But when I was a kid, AC/DC was too down and dirty for me. And now I really appreciate their musicianship, and their hard-rocking tunes. Highway to Hell and Back in Black are 2 of the best rock songs ever.

I also didn't like the Rolling Stones as a kid. It was all bravado and dance music, kind of a simplistic pop-rock. But now I appreciate all the great songs they've created, and the groove of their music.

TBH, I've been listening to Sirius for over 20 years, so I can control how much of that I hear. And the rock channels like Classic Vinyl/Rewind go deeper into the song catalogs than, say, the 70s or 80s channels. And since I listen to a lot of new music, I appreciate the classic stuff when I hear it.

I had (still have somewhere) all of my old Zep, AC/DC, & Nugent LP’s. (I can’t listen to Ted anymore either.) They were great when there were 20 other good songs to listen to from the same artist.

AC/DC does the big arena rock anthems better than anyone out there. Fantastic cock rock. But for the love of god, play more than the top 3 hits!

I was always more Beetles than Stones, but learned to appreciate the things that you talk about over the years. Give me Shelter makes the hair on my arms stand up from the girl singing back-up. She was amazing!
