The female singer on Gimme Shelter is Merry Clayton (born Mary Clayton). She had been a member of Ray Charles' Raeletts from 1967 to 1969 and had a few solo hits including After All This Time, Keep Your Eye On The Sparrow, Yes, a remake of Maxine Brown's Oh No Not My Baby – and her own version of Gimme Shelter. The pianist is Joe Sample, founding member of the Jazz Crusaders, and the drummer is Paul Humphrey, who, with his band the Cool Aid Chemists, would have an instrumental hit in 1971 with Cool Aid.

Prrrt! Meow! (harmonica)
LOL. I love that bit.
She's got a good voice.
She was great. Her vocals on the Stones version were even better. She was many months pregnant when she got called into the studio to sing her parts for it.
It was smokey and a very late at night session.
Joe Sample, founding member of the Jazz Crusaders,
I've got some CDs from both Joe & the Crusaiders.
I have a CD from him.
Me too.
