Astros make huge splash in free agency

Could be worse...I could be a Washington Nationals fan.

Houston has the 8th highest paid team this season. Problem is, not very much of it is going towards pitching. And the $33.8 million going to Miguel Tejada this year is an absolute joke.

I expect the bats to pick it up a little as the season progresses, but not enough to counteract the amount of runs Houston will give up this season. They're thinking of placing Brian Moehler on the 15-day DL after he had to leave yesterday's game in the third inning due to a hyperextended ERA (27.00).

Actually, his knee is a little sore.

Forget C.C. Forget Jake Peavy. Not interested in Ben Sheets. We don't even care about Randy Johnson or Andy Pettite. The Astros have brought Mike Hampton back to town!!! Yeah, the same guy who completely sat out the '06 and '07 seasons due to injury, and pitched a whopping 78 innings last year.

If this is Drayton McClane and Ed Wade's big move this offseason, I'm not looking forward to 2009.

He pitches against my Reds tonight. Hampton has piched well thus far.
 
Yeah it's only been two starts, but so far he's done much better than I expected. He can't give much more than 5 or 6 innings, but the Astros will be happy if he can just keep them in ball games. Tonight will be his first start in Houston as an Astro in 10 years. Hopefully it'll be a nice welcome back.
 
Hampton pitched good tonight. I think we only scored one run against your starting pitching in the four games but we took 3 of 4. :hatsoff:

After the shaky first inning, Hampton settled in nicely and ended up allowing 3 runs in 6.1 innings...not bad. A "quality start" as they say. What an overrated stat that is.

It was thought coming into the season that the bullpen would be the strongest piece of the team. That still may turn out to be true, but it definitely wasn't this weekend. The pen cost Houston two games against the Reds.
 
Hampton makes his return to Atlanta tonight, where he played six seasons for the Braves. I wonder how he'll be received? Hampton made 85 starts for the Braves, less than half of what a healthy pitcher would make in six seasons. I'm guessing the fans won't be too kind...
 
Hampton may have made his last start today. That should be the case, anyway. Can't keep running this guy out there every fifth day if you have any hopes of making the playoffs.

He had a nice career, but it's over. He's just not any good anymore.
 
I was thinking the same thing today watching him pitch. The STROS look like they can compete and cannot run him out there to have a chance.
 
Hampton should of been done 5 years ago. I still can't believe that contract he got that was over 100mil I believe. Guy made over 120 million in his career already.

He had a pretty nice career in the '90's with Houston and in 2000 with the Mets. But after that, Hampton hasn't done much. He had one decent year in Atlanta, but that's it. It's time for him to retire. I wrote a short piece about him and if interested you can read it here - Houston Astros
 
Like I said earlier, you should have left all Hampton talk in the Howard Stern forum so things like this would never happen
 
I guess the Astros think even less of Russ Ortiz than Mike Hampton. They released Ortiz today after he gave up 9 ER in 2.1 IP. I say do the same thing with Hampton.

Astros are screwed. They've got no pitching outside of Wandy Rodriguez and Roy Oswalt...and Oswalt may have to miss a few starts.
