I sometimes see a name in the Celebrity Death Thread that I don't recognize. Often the person was a coach or an athlete or a star of a TV show I never watched. And, contrary to what you might think, Mister scotch, there are many lesser-known celebrities whose deaths I do not post. How about this: From now on, I will not post any obituaries. Happy now?

Maybe entries into the OHW thread also need to be seconded to be recognized.

Question: If we second a OHW in the OHW thread does that make it no longer a OHW?

I share interesting details about recently deceased celebrities. Why has nobody ever complained about all the many hundreds of posts that say "29 for 1981," "21 for 1978," "19 for me," "16," "Seven" and on and on and on and on? Huh? Huh?
While this is not exactly related to the conversation at hand, it's a good time to say I do prefer posts that are more than "second" or "19 for me". I always add something that might spark a conversation and wish others did it more often (everyone adds occasionally, but I'd like to see it even more).
The Crew-Cuts had eleven other top-40 hits
Could this be the biggest subjective OHW yet?

Crew-cuts 13:1
Outfield 5:1
Tiffany 5:1
Dan Hartman 4:1
Martika 4:1
James & Bobby Purify 4:1

I think you're just pulling my leg; but in case you're genuinely ticked-off: I didn't actually ask you to stop posting obituaries, or change your posting criteria. Many others have, so take it up with them, not me. I was merely making a joke about the similarities between sad's list and your list (from my perspective).

Or a vote determines:
- No, they're still known for two hits
- Yes, they're a subjective OHW
- Actually, both hits are forgotten; zero hit wonder subjectively

And of course for bands like Nirvana,
- This is bullshit.
Again, I was just making a joke. Others may recognize the names of the artists you're posting; I'm fine with it. I think we only need "seconds" for celebrity deaths.

I think you're just pulling my leg;
Mister scotch, you know I'm not the leg puller I used to be. I meant what I said. As for what makes a "one-hit wonder," Mister sadchild began this thread by pointing out that an artist who has had two top-40 hits is not "technically" a one-hit wonder – but may subjectively be a one-hit wonder if the lower-charting top-40 hit is not well-known. I think we need to look at radio airplay over the years. For example, the Crew-Cuts were certainly not one-hit wonders in the 1950s but Sh-Boom and Earth Angel were their only songs to continue to get played in the 1960s and '70s. SiriusXM's '50s On 5 channel occasionally plays Sh-Boom but none of their other hits. This is where we have to be subjective: Do we judge them by their chart performance in the 1950s or by how they are remembered in 2023?

Stan Freberg, Jesse White & The Toads got to #14 in October 1954 with this parody:

Phoebe Snow
#5 "Poetry Man"
#23 "Gone at Last" (with Paul Simon)

#46 "Games"

I don't recognize either song. The first one reminds me of Carole King and Joni Mitchell.

Those are some good guesses for this week's WAI right there!

Poetry Man (which was just on Casey's countdown) was big. Gone at Last is a Paul Simon song from his popular album Still Crazy... She was just a guest vocalist. I think Snow was more of an R&B artist.

Country artist with hits in 2010 and 2013. Never heard his music. No plans to! But maybe someone else here knows if he's subjectively a OHW?

Avicii
#4 "Wake Me Up"
#16 "Hey Brother"

Pretty sure we've all heard #4 at every other public gathering (I heard it at my son's last robotics competition).
I don't recognize the other song though. Subjectively a OHW?
