Are They A One-Hit Wonder?

Level 42
#7 "Something About You"
#12 "Lessons In Love"

I didn't know that second one back then. And I don't think anyone remembers it now (aside from 80s music fans and music geeks). Hell, I don't remember it - and I listen to the VJ every week, so I know I've heard it at least a few times over the last 7 years. Subjective OHW.

And they are called a OHW by some

I featured them in my favorites list. I included 3 songs: Something, World Machine, and Leaving Me Now. The latter 2 songs got radio airplay, and I think Leaving is an occasional 80's "deep track", but certainly Something was the big hit, and the only one to have longevity.

Lessons in Love was from their follow-up album, and it was the lead single. So based on the success of the previous album, Lessons charted at the time, but the album (and the band) fizzled out.

So I'd agree that they're subjectively a OHW, despite liking several of their songs.

The Rooftop Singers. Walk Right In was number one for two weeks in January 1963 and was a staple of oldies radio stations for several decades. Does anyone remember their follow-up single, Tom Cat, which got to #20? Allow me to answer that: No. Nobody.

Those guys could actually jam.
There was some heavy funk roots and crazy time signatures.

#5 "It's Been Awhile"
#24 "So Far Away"

Pretend you've never tuned into a rock station in your life. You're on a steady diet of KISS-FM stations (goooood mornin' everybuddy! HONK HONK!). Britney headlines thrill you. You're gaga over Gaga. Justin Timberlake is the most talented singer in your world. Extreme has that great song "More Than Words" but most of their other songs are just yucky. You've heard a few Nirvana songs at random parties. You've heard a few Pearl Jam songs thanks to your bestie's weird older brother when he's home over the summer from college (what's that weird smell coming from under his door?). And when someone plays "It's Been Awhile" you're thinking, yeah I've heard that song before, it's okay whatever. But.... do you also know "So Far Away?"

Finger Eleven
#6 "Paralyzer"
#16 "One Thing"

Pretend you've never tuned into a rock station in your life .... etc ... I think you'd know both of these songs. Not a subjective OHW.

I am familiar with these songs and more from them. Although mainly because my wife is a huge fan.

I actually like the song One Thing, but never knew who did it (I sound like IRBS). Paralyzer is one of those songs - through no fault of the band - that got sucked into the playlist for every "classic alternative" radio station in the US. You know, the ones that play Sublime and Red Hot Chili Peppers every 3rd song. Someone did some marketing research once, and found that people who like grunge also like that Finger Eleven song.

I never remember the name of One Thing, but it was a big song.
I always think of it as the song that sounds like Emerson Lake and Palmer’s Christmas song.

Five Man Electrical Band
#3 "Signs"
#26 "Absolutely Right"

And in related news...

Tesla
#8 "Signs"
#10 "Love Song"

Five Man = probably subjectively a OHW. Never heard of that second hit.
Tesla = I think both songs are still fairly well known. Not a subjective OHW.

Agreed on both.

Dan Hill
#3 "Sometimes When We Touch"
#6 "Can't We Try"
#41 "All I See Is Your Face"
#43 "Never Thought (That I Could Love)"

Another person I think both hits are still fairly well known in the mainstream. Not subjectively a OHW.

Despite others evidently thinking otherwise...

What I like to call Dentist Office music (although my dentist locally plays techno over the speakers during business hours, which is pretty cool!)

Paralyzer was one of those songs that was played on every station that even remotely played rock. Active Rock, Alternative Rock, even a few pop rock stations, the One Thing was also pretty popular with AAA stations, along with Active Rock when they were in the slower part of the playlist. Paralyzer has been in my favorites playlist for a while.

Will Smith

Hit #1: Chris Rock

Hit #2: It appears this wasn’t the first time Will Smith hit someone in the face. Anthony Mackie told a story about how Will accidentally punched him at Will’s birthday party when the two miscommunicated about whether they were high fiving or hugging.

Hit #3: At an event for Men In Black, Will Smith gave a fan a slap on the cheek after the fan attempted to kiss Will on the mouth.

So he's got three hits, but is he subjectively a one-hit wonder? Do people only know him these days for the Chris Rock hit?

Have we covered "Funky Town" by Lipps Inc. and Psedo Echo? Both of those artists had the 1 hit (which reached #1) and nothing else (I don't think) but since the same song was a hit twice, that disqualifies it for a OHW doesn't it?
