Are They A One-Hit Wonder?

Patti Smyth
#2 "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough"
#33 "No Mistakes"

Despite not hearing "No Mistakes" much anymore, I think these two solo hits are still known enough for her not to be a subjective OHW.

Of course, there's also her hit with Scandal, but I consider that to be a separate entity.
#7 "The Warrior"
#41 "Hands Tied"
#41 "Beat Of A Heart"

Her 2nd biggest Mainstream Rock hit was Goodbye to You (with Scandal), which hit #65 on Billboard 100, and #5 on Mainstream. If you add those two to her 2 solo hits, that's 4 songs of hers that get rotation on the radio. Call that whatever you want.

#3 "Dazz"
#18 "Dusic"

I know "Dazz" from a few songs where rappers have rapped over a sample of it (most notably Ice Cube on "No Vaseline").

I just listened to a little of "Dusic" ... never heard it. Subjectively a OHW.

I do however see that they did the original "Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody" (I hadn't heard before today), which was sampled in Kid N Play's song of the same name (I remember from back in the day).

Multihit wonder in the funk and R&B/urban worlds. Popwise, they may not get any play at all.

Barenaked Ladies
#1 "One Week"
#15 "Pinch Me"
#44 "It's All Been Done"

Here is another perfect example of how the Hot 100 does not reflect an artist's level of success. Not a OHW subjectively or in any other imaginable way.

Had the show started a few years later, they probably could have gotten a Hot 100 hit from their "Big Bang Theory" theme song.

Wait a minute; what about If I Had a Million Dollars? Probably their most well-known song?

They have a gazzilion hits in Canada.

Best-known? I'm familiar with it but I can't say that I recall hearing it on the radio. Maybe in Canada, but definitely not in the US where "One Week" is a '90s staple.

I rarely heard "Million$" back in the 90s on FM, though I did know that one and "Brian Wilson" through friends. It wasn't until "The Old Apartment" in '96 that they became a band known in the mainstream and not just a few people I knew.

They became well known in Canada when they were banned from Toronto for their offensive name. The mayor was routinely laughed at after that and they became famous.

In New England, the adult contemporary stations play a variety of live versions of Million, on a regular basis. They change some words in each. That was an AC staple before One Week even came out. I would imagine it's the same in other parts of the US.

I can't say that I've heard it on any of the AC stations I've heard in Louisiana.

I didn't listen to WRXV 92.5 The River much in the 90s (I was more into the Active Rock stations) but I had it as a preset to check when the harder stations played something I didn't want to hear. I could see them playing it back then - they probably did once in a while.

They even had their own live-in-studio version of it. I think it's the recording where someone tells a story about a lady that yelled at him that day, and mentions "Fruit Roll-ups".

But back in the 90s, I don't remember the song being well-known. Just a few people I knew knew it. Kinda obscure-ish.

I first heard it at a college club function circa 1994. Since then, I would argue I've heard it more on my own Spotify play list than I've heard it on the radio. I doubt it shows up on '90s on 9 as even a "lost hit." Maybe it gets played on one of the alternative stations. I have no idea for certain because I don't listen to them.
