Are They A One-Hit Wonder?

Romantics
#3 "Talking In Your Sleep"
#37 One In A Million"
#49 "What I Like About You"

Not sure how to classify this one. They are best known and remembered for #3 and #49, not #37. I enjoyed #37 back in the day and still listen when I hear it on the 80s channel once a year, but play #3 and #49 for anyone under 40, most will know at least one. Then play #37...... *crickets*

"What I Like About You" needs to be in the I Can't Believe It's Not A Top 40 thread. So not a one hit wonder. 2 maybe.

Yep it is. And one of the top 5 "really super duper can't believe it" of the bunch.
Of the 3 songs you listed, it is the most played now. And the one I remember the most. I have heard of "Talking In Your Sleep" but would have expected it to be their second most successful hit. The 3rd song I have never heard of.

Total shocker for What I Like!
There has to be an error in the accounting department.
I know One in a Million, but I never remember it. (If you know what I mean.)

Quiet Riot
#5 "Cum On Feel The Noize"
#31 "Bang Your Head"

As a metalhead, I know that whole Metal Health album front to back. But to the gum-chewing, Madonna and Taylor Swift-loving, Tik-Tok'ing, duck-facing, bottle-flipping and dabbing generation of pop music fans, I'm pretty sure they only recognize "Noize". Unless they've watched the original Footloose, where "Bang Your Head" plays for a moment. I'd call QR subjectively a one-hit wonder.

I am familiar with both songs. I think I still hear both.

My wife says he opened for New Kids concert she went to in 89 or 90.
I don't remember his song at all.
I asked my best friend from high school's sister about this. She was (and still) is a huge New Kids fan. My best friend and I hated them, but somehow knew all their songs. She said she remembered the song and he did open for New Kids. Also, she said there was a rumor that was dating Tiffany. Lol.

I remember both songs, but agree that "Noize" is more recognizable.

The Gap Band
#24 "Early in the Morning"
#31 "You Dropped a Bomb on Me"

I know both songs, but would consider them to be a zero hit wonder. These were moderate hits and I don't think these songs are played much these days.

I wonder if people under 35 know "You Dropped A Bomb". I think some might...?

I knew Robert Palmer's 1988 cover of "Early" before I heard the Gap Band's original years later.

I think Gap Band is most known for their song "I Don't Believe You Want to Get Up and Dance".... better known as "Oops Upside Your Head". Sampled by Snoop, Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars, Ice Cube, Snap and Wu-Tang,.

The Gap Band is probably more known on Urban outlets. "Oops Upside Your Head" peaked at #102, but was a top ten hit on the US R&B and UK charts.

Snap! made a version that was their follow-up to "The Power". It peaked at #35.

Dickie Goodman
#4 "Mr. Jaws"
#33 "Energy Crisis '74"
#42 "The Touchables in Brooklyn"
#42 "Watergrate"
#44 "Ben Crazy"
#45 "On Campus"
#48 "Kong"
I remember both "Mr. Jaws" and "Energy Crisis '74". Surprised "Mr. Jaws" made it to #4. I thought 30s is the appropriate peak for these novelty songs.

Gary Wright
  • 2: "Love Is Alive" (1976)
  • 2: "Dream Weaver" (1976)
  • 16: "Really Wanna Know You" (1981)

Several other non top 40 releases.
