Adventures In Koopland

I have to do something stupid this evening and I know it's stupid and I don't need any of you reminding me it's stupid. I'm just here ranting.

I don't have my license back yet but I need to drive the old man to the hospital sleep center for a sleep apnea test. This is actually the second time I'm doing it. I did it about a month ago for the initial overnight diagnosis and now he needs to go back for another overnight so they can give him that machine and calibrate it. This is the furthest I have driven since I lost the license in 2013. I sometimes go to the grocery store and I know it's wrong but it's literally 2 miles from my house so I rationalize it by thinking the likelihood of getting pulled over is all but nil. The hospital is about 10 miles away and it freaks me out to go that far. What I did last time and will do again tonight is drive him there, get him set up and then just spend the night in the hospital parking lot in the van. That way I only have to make the trip there and back instead of going both ways twice. I probably wouldn't get arrested if pulled over but I would very likely get a ticket and make my life all the more difficult, especially when I'm already convinced I'm going to be fired whenever they get around to finger printing me at work. Last time I brought the bike with me and biked to Steak n Shake at like 2 am. I think I'll do that again this time around.

So that's the agenda for this evening. We leave in 45 minutes and will be back around 7 am tomorrow. Time for a scary drive and then a somewhat fun, but uncomfortable night in the van, then another scary morning drive home.
**Makes a quick phone call to the Boca Raton PD** :D

Aren't you technically on probation for the complete duration of your original sentence (not just the time you served)? If you get caught doing something grossly illegal, such as driving without a license, does it not void the release conditions?

Now wouldn't it be great if they had cars you could hire, for a small fee, which could take you from point A to point B and they would come with their own fully licensed driver? Someone should look into inventing that. If they are invented, I think they should be called taxis. Has a nice ring to it.

My bet is that Hendrick can afford an Uber.

When do you get your license back?
Do you have to go in to report to the court for anything?
Can you ask for permission to drive the old boy to Dr's appointments?

Well it all worked out and we are both back at our respective homes. Still not the greatest of ideas but at least nothing bad happened.

I was officially off probation in the beginning of February so if something happened it would not have been a probation violation and thus not be a violation of release conditions. It would have been a brand new charge.

Hendrik uses a wheelchair when he goes out. His van can fit the chair. So that rules out Uber and a taxi. Like I said in the beginning I knew this was stupid. I could have arraigned it for someone else to drive his car if I really wanted to be safe but the appointment was spur of the moment because the sleep center has 2 beds and 1 person cancelled for last night so we took that guy's spot.

I can get my license back I've just been cheap and lazy. Insurance will cost a ton and I live close enough to work that it's only 1 bus for like 6 miles so I often take turns either biking to work or taking the bus.

Nothing wrong with saving some cash. It's good to do.
It'll probably cost you more if you get caught though.
But you know that, and don't really need us preaching at you.

New Hampshire doesn't require auto insurance, but if you're found to be at-fault in an accident, you can't drive unless you get a rider policy called an SR-22, on top of getting insurance. The rider is around $3k per year.

Today was a very good day. For the first time since 2013 I am now a fully legal Florida driver! I waited this long because it was quite expensive and I didn't really need to dive that much. I could have gotten my license back around a year ago but at that time I had all the court costs and classes to pay. That significantly depleted my savings so before I go spending thousands more I had to build my reserve back up. I recently got to the point where my savings were enough that I could take this hit and still feel comfortable.

I started the process 2 weeks ago. I went to the DMV to get instructions on what I needed to do. If you show up bright and early (like 6:30 am) and wait until they open at 8:15, it's not so bad and I wasn't stuck there all day. They told me what needed to be done and I got on it. They said I needed the SR-22 that Scotch talked about above but it turns out I needed even more liability than that so I had to get FR-44. Thankfully it wasn't 3k but it was still a lot. The law says I need that policy for 2 years after my conviction. Fortunately all of last counts even though I didn't have a license. So I bought this FR-44 for 6 months and will have to buy it once more in October before I can downgrade to the cheaper SR-22. I will then need the SR-22 for a year and after that I can go back to a normal policy. A funny thing is that Geico sends me junk mail almost weekly. When I called them about getting the FR-44 they said they didn't want to insure me cause of my awful record. So they send me all this mail for years saying they want me back and then when I finally am willing to come back they don't want me. Hah. So I went to some broker and got insurance from some rando company called Foremost. Whatever, it will do fine for a year.

Then I had to go get that drunkard Interlock device installed in the car. I called a bunch of them and found the cheapest. Those companies don't seem like the most professional seeing how I was able to bargain them down. The one I went with gave me a very cheap price in comparison to the others but of course when I actually got to the garage to have it installed they wanted more. I sat on the phone with them for like 2 hours while at the garage and they said that I should just pay what the garage asked and then when I go in for the monthly maintenance they will credit the extra money to the monthly fees. Not so sure if that is actually going to happen but we'll see when I go back in May.

The device itself is kinda finicky. Having used it for a couple days now I have a bunch of questions for my May visit to the shop. My main concern is making sure that a reading that does not process properly is not marked down as a fail. Sometimes it will make me take the test twice because the first one didn't register and that is concerning.

So I got the very expensive insurance last Tuesday and then got the expensive Interlock on Friday and then went back to the DMV today. Once again I got there 2 hours before opening and was the 7th person in line. By the time it opened at 8:15 there were well over 100 people in the line. I had all the proper documents and was able to get my license! Of course the DMV charged another big fine but I'm just happy to have my license back. Until October I have a license that requires me to only drive a car with an Interlock. In 6 months I will go back to the DMV after I get the Interlock taken out and I will have a completely normal license.

So a very good but also very expensive couple of weeks. Ever since around 8.2016 when I finally decided to take care of all this I have tried not to drive at all. There have been instances, like I talked about last month, where I did drive and it really freaked me out. Even going the 2 miles to the grocery store was stressful. I am happy to be fully legal now and have all those worries behind me.

Congrats Koop on getting your driver license back, sucks you have to drive around with an interlock device. But after a while, a few months will go by and it will finally be out of your life. At least some good news is going around for yea, I like to see some for me soon.

I probably have jury duty tomorrow. They give you a number to call the night before to see if you're still needed. At first was I going to get out of it but now that I can legally drive I think it will be fun to go up to West Palm for a day. And if I'm really lucky I will get on the Face Eater jury. That would be amazing. But I'd probably have to disclose how I've talked about him here a million times and likely be disqualified.

Man, you're becoming quite the responsible citizen.
I've always wanted to do jury duty, but whenever I get the letter, the timing sucks and I really hope I don't get picked.
