Adventures In Koopland

it depends what type of job you do. Maybe the background check won't be that bad, they can still keep you around.

I appreciate the optimism but I work security. While there is very little actual security involved in the job, my title is still security and withholding an arrest is definitely grounds for termination.

Welp, I'm going to get fired. I knew it would happen eventually and it's nobody's fault but my own so I can't be too angry about it. It's a real bummer and freaking scary.

Just got a branch wide memo that we are all going to get fingerprinted for some new security screening. Once I get printed my DUI will pop right up. I didn't tell the company about the arrest all they way back in 2013 and I also didn't tell them about my little stint in the pokey last year. I took 10 vacation days and spent 8 of them in the Palm Beach County government hotel.

The memo didn't say when the screenings will start, just that we will all have to go to some office or lab or whatever to get it done sometime in the not too distant future. So this could go down next week or in 6 months, I have no idea.

Shit man, I've been at this gig since 2008 so it will suck to lose it. Guess I need to start getting my resume together. Although that might be a problem since I doubt a place I've lied to by omission for the past 5 years will be all that willing to give me a glowing reference.

Fuck.
Don't assume they do anything with those fingerprints, or that yours will match.

You may get brownie points for using vacation days and not paid leave of some sort.

I think you should sink a boat and live off gofundme as your next career.

There is always the possibility that they do nothing with the prints are simply making us all get them done for some legal BS or to look better to incoming residents. Yet I think the most likely scenario is that they will at least run a FL check on all the prints. Guess I'll find out sooner or later.

HA! That made me laugh. Well done! :)

They may do nothing with them. It costs money to check fingerprints. They may just file them in case something happens in the future.

They may also hang on to them in case stuff starts getting stolen. My guess is that they wouldn't bother unless meds start showing up missing.

Also, you farked up with a DUI, not grand theft or assault. It may be a pass since it wasn't on company time.

No matter what, good luck!

Yea that's a security thing we had a whole bunch of meetings about a few years ago. As of now I think we have a pretty good system. The only residents who get meds given to them are the ones in personal care or the nursing home type facility. The vast majority of residents, who live in "independent living" are responsible to get their own stuff. With controlled substances the RN's are the only ones allowed to handle them. The aides can give out all the other stuff. Security technically has access to them but there is never a reason to open the lock box. And even if we wanted to it is located right at the nurse's station that is always monitored by at least one nurse. So a nurse could steal them if she wanted to, but if anyone else wanted to steal them it would be impossible without involving at least one of the nurses in some sort of thievery collusion.

You guys have calmed me down a bit but I'm still super nervous. There is nothing that can be done for now so I'm going to try and not make myself insane about it.

REMAIN CHILL BRO!

Ok, both these things sound good in theory but only lasted about 2 minutes in practice. I am very clearly making myself crazy. So many things keep running through my head. Like what do I do with my 401k when I get fired? For the past bunch of years it just comes out of my check and the only time I ever think about it is when I get paperwork in the mail. I guess I'll just be letting it sit idle if I get get fired and have to take some shitty interim job. Also, I need to make a dentist appointment. I barely use my health insurance so that wouldn't be a huge loss if it's only for a year or two but I do use my dental plan. Better get my cavities now so I can get them filled while it's still covered.

And these are just the two things I've been obsessing about for the past couple hours. A few more hours from now and I'll likely be onto new things to be freaking out about.

I told you a few weeks ago to go back to the dentist.

When I got laid off a number of years ago, it was the same day I already had a dentist appointment scheduled.
I showed up at the dentist an hour or two after getting the news. They always check your blood pressure before they get started. She said my numbers were great. I said "Not bad for a guy that just got laid off..."
They were all shocked.

If they bag you for the prints, it'll all be ok soon enough.
Besides, they could probably run a background check whenever they wanted without the prints.

There is absolutely no point worrying about stuff you can't control.

An old prayer:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.
And no witnesses when I choke someone that won't get off my back to death.

Spent the night at my dad's cause I'm taking him to a doctor's appointment this morning and at 4:30 am the building wide fire alarm went off. Turns out it was not a false alarm and the freaking elevator motor caught on fire. It was very smoky and a bunch of firemen were here but there was no real damage besides to the engine itself. Fun little nighttime drama.

I have to do something stupid this evening and I know it's stupid and I don't need any of you reminding me it's stupid. I'm just here ranting.

I don't have my license back yet but I need to drive the old man to the hospital sleep center for a sleep apnea test. This is actually the second time I'm doing it. I did it about a month ago for the initial overnight diagnosis and now he needs to go back for another overnight so they can give him that machine and calibrate it. This is the furthest I have driven since I lost the license in 2013. I sometimes go to the grocery store and I know it's wrong but it's literally 2 miles from my house so I rationalize it by thinking the likelihood of getting pulled over is all but nil. The hospital is about 10 miles away and it freaks me out to go that far. What I did last time and will do again tonight is drive him there, get him set up and then just spend the night in the hospital parking lot in the van. That way I only have to make the trip there and back instead of going both ways twice. I probably wouldn't get arrested if pulled over but I would very likely get a ticket and make my life all the more difficult, especially when I'm already convinced I'm going to be fired whenever they get around to finger printing me at work. Last time I brought the bike with me and biked to Steak n Shake at like 2 am. I think I'll do that again this time around.

So that's the agenda for this evening. We leave in 45 minutes and will be back around 7 am tomorrow. Time for a scary drive and then a somewhat fun, but uncomfortable night in the van, then another scary morning drive home.
