Next week: 1984

They played a different version of "Medley" than I remember hearing in 1981. I think the radio stations I was listening to chopped off the opening crap before "Sugar, Sugar". I always remember it starting with the opening bars of "Sugar, Sugar". The rest sounds the same. But either the VJs played an extended version or the local SK radio station edited.

Stars On 45 was a group of Dutch session vocalists and musicians. Medley was a 12-inch single, 11:30 in length. It was cut to 4:48 for release as a 45 in the UK, France, Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands. The 45 released in the United States and Canada omitted the "Let's do it! You gotta beat the clock" intro and was cut to 4:05. Here are all three versions:

What was the first medley to reach number one? I'm glad I asked. It was Moonglow & Theme From Picnic by Morris Stoloff, Columbia Pictures' musical director and orchestra leader from 1936 to 1962. This was number one for three weeks in June 1956.
