No surprises

One more thought on this week's countdown: In listening to Alan back talk about "Neutron Dance" he was musing if that song would have been a #6 hit if not on the movie. That is one of their better songs and they were consistently producing top 10 hits I don't understand why the speculation about them.

Next week: 1983. I predict we may hear some Dexy's Midnight Runners somewhere on the countdown.

31. TURN UP THE RADIO - AUTOGRAPH

When drummer Keni Richards' friend, Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth, asked him to join him on the road to party on their 1984 tour, Richards said he couldn’t because his then-unnamed band was re-recording their demos for free with renowned producer & engineer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones). The next day, Roth put Richards on the phone with Eddie Van Halen who offered his band an opening slot on the tour. It was soon after this the band chose the name Autograph.

Five months into Van Halen’s tour, the head of RCA Records saw Autograph at Madison Square Garden and signed them. Their debut album Sign In Please was released in October. Its lead single “Turn Up The Radio” – the last song written for it, and one RCA originally didn’t want included on the album – became a surprise pop crossover hit in early 1985.
I loved that album. I learned how to play it way back in the day. I could get through everything but the second half of the solo.
My son: "This song to me is 'If I play the saxophone sexily enough, will you come back to me?'"
Is there any other reason to play the saxophone?
Won't ever get into the top 40
No surprises.
#98 Roman Holliday "One Foot Back In Your Door"
That can't be comfortable.

21. SAVE A PRAYER - DURAN DURAN

Not sure why a song they released in 1982 charted in 1985.
From Wikipedia: ""It was not originally issued as a single in the United States, although the music video was very popular on MTV. A special US single version was finally released in January 1985 and reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100."

#60 Go West "We Close Our Eyes"
This is the only one out the list that I definitely could have seen the in the 40.
#79 UTFO "Roxanne, Roxanne"
I'll circle back to this in my Bubbling Under post.

Here are the songs below the 100 for 3/9/85.

Bubbling Under The Hot 100

#101 Maze "Back In Stride" (entered the chart on 3/16/85 at #95, peaked at #88, #1 R&B)
#102 Luther Vandross "Till My Baby Comes Home" (entered the chart on 3/16/85 at #90, peaked at #29, #4 R&B)
#103 Jesse Johnson's Revue "Be Your Man" (entered the chart on 3/16/85 at #89, peaked at #61, #4 R&B)
#104 Jack Wagner "Premonition" (peaked at #101)
#105 Alphaville "Forever Young" (entered the chart on 3/23/85 at #95, peaked at #93)
#106 Jenny Burton "Bad Habits" (peaked at #101, #19 R&B, #1 Dance)
#107 Ready For The World "Tonight" (peaked at #103, #6 R&B)
#108 Donnie Iris "Injured In the Game of Love" (entered the chart on 3/23/85 at #93, peaked at #91, #28 Rock)
#109 Roxanne Shante "Roxanne's Revenge" (peaked at this position, #22 R&B)
#110 Felder/Womack "I'll Still Be Looking Up to You" (peaked at #102, #2 R&B)

Comments:
  • "Back In Stride" was very popular on my local R&B station.
  • "Till My Baby Comes Home" is the only one that broke the 40.
  • "Bad Habits" was at the #1 spot on the Dance chart for 11 eleven weeks. I heard another version of this song in the early 2000s, but I didn't know it was a remake.
  • "Roxanne's Revenge" was one of the many answer songs to "Roxanne Roxanne" by UFTO which debuted this week at #79. The answer songs got out of control, but were very entertaining. The most outrageous one to me was "Roxanne's a Man".
  • "I'll Still Be Looking Up to You" is also credited as "(No Matter How High I Get) I'll Still be Looking Up to You", sung by Womack and Alltrinna Grayson. Wilton Felder was saxophone and bass player.

This is very surprising. This song is played regularly on the local Hits of the 70s/80s/90s FM station in Toronto. I expected it to be top 40 at least.

The Wiki page shared that the song was released three times and never made the 40 which is crazy.

Yeah I saw that too. But I wonder why. It's not every day a band or label says, "Let's take a 3 year old song from two albums ago and release it as a single."
I agree. I wonder if it was gamble after the video became popular on MTV.
