35. 'TIL I LOVE YOU - BARBRA STREISAND & DON JOHNSON

barbara streisand with .... sonny crockett?
He's used to hanging around with crocodiles.

33. DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT ('TIL IT'S GONE) - CINDERELLA

as each year goes by, his voice grates on me more and more. i've gone from 'big fan' to 'ok it's been 45 seconds and i can stands no more'
I'm the same way with AC/DC.
Keifer has the same thing going on. It just isn't musical to me, and sounds really painful.

36. GROOVY KIND OF LOVE - PHIL COLLINS

I respect Phil Collins for his career with Genesis, and his pretty good solo career, but only he could take a classic do-wop song and turn it into a cheeseball love ballad.

33. DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'VE GOT ('TIL IT'S GONE) - CINDERELLA

They weren't made to do ballads. Take a song like 'Gypsy Road' that's right in their wheelhouse. They were at their best when they poured on the blues. This doesn't do it for me.

29. PUT A LITTLE LOVE IN YOUR HEART - ANNIE LENNOX AND AL GREEN

Annie Lennox is one of those that could sing the phone book and make it sound interesting. This song was from a movie as I recall.

24. SILHOUETTE - KENNY G

The one artist on the planet that could make Michael Bolton sound like Slayer in comparison. I imagine his stuff is playing on the muzak system in hell.

23. KOKOMO - THE BEACH BOYS

I have a healthy respect for Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, (Pet Sounds anyone?) but they cheezed it up for the Cocktail soundtrack, and brought along Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) for the ride.

15. BAD MEDICINE - BON JOVI

Not a bad follow-up to Slippery when Wet, it started to go down hill after this one.

13. FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED - VAN HALEN

Van Hagar had it's moments, and this was one of them. Still liked the DLR years better.

9. WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE - GUNS 'N ROSES

I remember being in front of the TV when this video premiered on MTV, and I was completely fucking floored! People credit Nirvana for killing off hair metal, but these guys started the process. Still a favorite to this day!

6. EVERY ROSE HAS ITS THORN - POISON

The only reason I respect Poison as musicians, they could do the ballads really well.

1. LOOK AWAY - CHICAGO

These guys were making hits long past their sell by date. You figure they'd hang it up after Peter Cetera left. Not to be!

barf. same with aint even done with the night.

24. PASSION - ROD STEWART

can't hear this song without remembering hearing this in one of the many soft-porn "skinemax" (aka Cinemax) movies that i would VCR and watch when my folks weren't around back when i was about 13. the song played over and over throughout the movie. pretty sure it was this movie...

(this trailer is NSFW!)

13. TELL IT LIKE IT IS - HEART

probably in the minority here, but aside from 'kick it out', 'even it up' & 'dog and butterfly', i don't like pre-1983 heart including some of their biggest hits like 'crazy on you', magic man' & 'barracuda'.

One of many late 70s/early 80s "classy" not-quite-porno films with a "story" on "Skinemax". Probably designed in an effort to make wives let their husbands watch them because "they aren't (quite) porn".

Anyhoo, I saw a handful of them back when I was about 13/14. Was a great way to learn the facts of life. Well, that and watching scrambled hardcore cable channels, trying to decipher where the boobs are lol.

If your TV had a fine tuning knob, you could get a black and white picture. The old OnTV channel which was a scrambled service. was watchable that way too.

2. MORE THAN I CAN SAY - LEO SAYER
1. LADY - KENNY ROGERS

1980, the year popular music got stuck in the elevator.

32. I LOVE A RAINY NIGHT - EDDIE RABBITT

A nice enough song by a guy who had a lot of hits on the country charts, but this was a rare one on the pop charts as I recall.

27. THIS TIME - JOHN COUGAR

John Cougar/Mellencamp is one of those artists that there is really no in between when it comes to quality. It's legendary (The 'Scarecrow' album, Paper and Fire, and a few others) or it's crap (This song, Ain't even done with the night, Jack and Diane, and to a lesser extent, Hurts So Good, although I'm not as tired of that song as I am 'Jack and Diane'.)

20. THE TIDE IS HIGH - BLONDIE

This song, 'I Shot the Sheriff' and most of the work of the Police are examples of times where Rock mimicked Reggae, with mixed results. The Police were legendary (Best Rock Trio in my own personal opinion) and Debbie Harry did a fine job on this one. And of course another band in this genre are The Clash who are in a league of their own.

7. HUNGRY HEART - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

'The River' had lots of hits, but I don't think it's his best collective work (although still good!) That title belongs to Born to Run with the E Street Band, or Nebraska on his own.

4. (JUST LIKE) STARTING OVER - JOHN LENNON

While I think the album might have done well had he not met his untimely demise at the hands of Mark David Chapman earlier in the month, it was the ultimate tribute to his work and the veracity of Beatles fans that this charted so high. Also despite the fact that it included a side of Yoko Ono's solo work who couldn't sing her way out of a paper bag.

3. ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST- QUEEN

One of those tunes I don't particularly mind the fact that it's overplayed because my opinion of the band as a whole is so high. I also featured this song on a Theme Songs week a while back (which is coming back after the first of the year, BTW) on Rock hits that took advantage of the Disco craze at the time (even though it would die out shortly after),

LMAO right on the money, dude.

37. SISTERS ARE DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES - EURYTHMICS AND ARETHA FRANKLIN

this sure ain't "Love Is A Stranger" or "Who's That Girl". not my thing.

27. OBJECT OF MY DESIRE - STARPOINT

guilty pleasure. but i can't take it more than about once a year.

25. I'M YOUR MAN - WHAM

RIP George. never liked a single Wham song, but i really enjoyed Faith back in the late 80s.

14. WALK OF LIFE - DIRE STRAITS

"woohoo" ... "woohoo" ... "woohoo" ... "woohoo" ... "woohoo" ... "woohoo" ... "woohoo" ... "woohoohoo" ... "woohoo" ...

11. PERFECT WAY - SCRITTI POLITTI

guilty pleasure.

10. SLEEPING BAG - ZZ TOP

owned this on vinyl back in the day. loved all 5 songs on side 1, couldn't tell you a thing about side 2.

5. SEPARATE WAYS - PHIL COLLINS & MARILYN MARTIN

so a buddy of mine was a dj back in high school. he and his other dj buddies would share songs with each other by taping their 45s. well, they also always played pranks on each other. the best prank ever was when a friend of his asked for a copy of this song, so my friend taped it for him - but added something extra. he added the word "penis" whispered softly in the background. when you played it at normal volume (like to check and make sure the copy came out good), you couldn't hear it. however, when the guy blasted it at full volume in a high school gym full of couples dancing, at the end of the song they all heard, "for now we'll go on living separate lives ... silence ... 'peeeeeeenis' ... silence ... 'yes for now, we'll go on living separate lives." classic.

That's what was wrong with that song. I remember having to listen to it way too often on the radio at my high school job, but it wasn't coming back right. Now it adds up. I still don't like it. The peeeeeenis prank would have made it so much better.

40. SUN CITY - ARTISTS UNITED AGAINST APARTHEID

I remember seeing the video for this as a kid, seeing Little Steven and thinking 'who is this guy?' not knowing that he was apart of arguably the greatest Rock and Roll back up band on the planet (with maybe SRV's Double Trouble or the Tom Petty's Heartbreakers coming in a close second)

35. SEX AS A WEAPON - PAT BENATAR

And underrated rocker that doesn't get nearly enough airplay, instead choosing to beat 'Love is a Battlefield' or 'Hit me with your best shot' to death. Get some variety people!?!

25. I'M YOUR MAN - WHAM

Well the rock gods have taken another legend away from us. As much as George Michael's early career output was debatable (although from a pure pop standpoint, there really was no debate) his later work was probably his most critically acclaimed if not most popular. And the dude knew how to sing. I remember the Freddie Mercury tribute concert when he tackled Queen's 'Somebody To Love' and NAILED it!

15. WE BUILT THIS CITY - STARSHIP

Often voted as the worst song in rock history, and arguably the starting point for Grace Slick leaving the band for good.

9. SMALL TOWN - JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP

When you take an album like 'Scarecrow' and measure it up with John Mellencamp's earlier output, there really is no comparison. Somewhat similar to George Michael going from Wake Me Up Before You Go Go to Faith. Scarecrow would be the peak of his career, as nothing before or since has come close as a collective album that is inherently listenable from front to back.

4. ALIVE & KICKING - SIMPLE MINDS

Another band that still resonates from this era to this day, I could hear this or 'Don't you forget about me' and never get tired of it.

Personally I put Uh-Huh and Whenever We Wanted ahead of Scarecrow. But in all fairness, I've never listened to Scarecrow all the way through.

If you take the cheesy Casio track "Jackie O" off of Uh-Huh, you've got 6 solid bangers in a row.

And I am probably in the minority here, but my fav is Whenever We Wanted. Every track a solid rocker. I've listened to that one front to back 100+times.

I liked JC/M and pretty much had all his albums except his first ones all the way up to his early 90s stuff. I liked Scarecrow and Uh Huh as albums (probably the only ones I can listen to fully) but really liked his early stuff (which seems to give Jon and others fits) like Ain't Even Done with the night, Hurt So Good, and Jack & Dianne.

It is interesting to hear how other people can have different opinions on the same songs.
