28. WE DIDN’T START THE FIRE – BILLY JOEL

I mentioned before if this was written today, it'd be a 2 hour song!

26. HEAVEN – WARRANT

Hated, Hated, Hated Warrant!!! So glad Guns and Roses and Nirvana came along to shut this genre down, 1 or 2 redeemable bands out of this genre (although I DO NOT consider Cinderella and Skid Row "hair" bands like these guys and others!)

25. BACK TO LIFE – SOUL II SOUL (FEATURING CARON WHEELER)

Always liked this song.

21. GIRL I’M GONNA MISS YOU – MILLI VANILLI
20. BLAME IT ON THE RAIN – MILLI VANILLI

Nothing much to say here, the actual guys could sing. The ones on the videos were just posers.

19. CALL IT LOVE - POCO
18. MIXED EMOTIONS – THE ROLLING STONES
17. THE BEST – TINA TURNER

Pretty decent tunes from some oldsters. Considering all the rock stars Keith Richards has outlived, that's a pretty good feat. And we won't mention the small crush I had on Tina Turner despite the fact she was old enough to be my grandmother. :cautious:

11. LOVE SONG – THE CURE

This song almost seems out of place on a countdown like this. Milli Vanilli, Motley Crue, Tina Turner, and hey, the Cure. One of these things is not like the other. Good tune, though!

6. DR. FEELGOOD – MOTLEY CRUE

Another band lumped in with the hair genre, but every one of these guys are solid musicians who could play their instruments.

5. LOVE IN AN ELEVATOR - AEROSMITH

Used to like this song a lot, but a lot of the bands' newer stuff from this era gets overplayed on the radio around here.

3. LISTEN TO YOUR HEART - ROXETTE

These guys had hits to burn for a while and then just kind of went away. Not a bad tune among their hits, either.

2. SOWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE – TEARS FOR FEARS

Not up to the level of 'Shout' or 'Everybody wants to rule the world' but still a decent tune in it's own right.

1. MISS YOU MUCH – JANET JACKSON

Rhythm Nation 1812 was Janet Jackson's 'Thriller', some might make the argument it's better than Thriller. I don't know if I'd go that far, but it's on that level.

21. GIRL I’M GONNA MISS YOU – MILLI VANILLI
20. BLAME IT ON THE RAIN – MILLI VANILLI

Didn't the actual singer work in a gas station? I always thought they should have given him the Grammy award. They started the trend of Vocal lip sync, fake vocals that is used today in pop music . If Milli Vanilli recorded that record in 2016 instead of 1989, they would have been praised instead of booted out of the music industry.

34. ME SO HORNY – THE 2 LIVE CREW

33. GLAMOUR BOYS – LIVING COLOUR

one of the cheesier songs on a good album.

28. WE DIDN’T START THE FIRE – BILLY JOEL

i still really dig this one, despite billy himself telling billboard and stern how little he likes it.

27. IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME - CHER

great story about dianne warren begging cher to sing it.

26. HEAVEN – WARRANT
Hated, Hated, Hated Warrant!!!

aside from "down boys" and "uncle tom's cabin", i totally agree. "cherry pie" makes me want to wretch.

11. LOVE SONG – THE CURE
This song almost seems out of place on a countdown like this. Milli Vanilli, Motley Crue, Tina Turner, and hey, the Cure. One of these things is not like the other. Good tune, though!

in the same way i call a 90s song that feels like an 80s song a "neighties" song, i would do the reverse and say this is an 80s song that feels like a 90s song (i'm open to suggestion on what to call it!)

3. LISTEN TO YOUR HEART - ROXETTE
These guys had hits to burn for a while and then just kind of went away. Not a bad tune among their hits, either.

they died quick in the US, but kept making smash hits all the way up to 2007 in europe.

They started the trend of Vocal lip sync, fake vocals that is used today in pop music.
Are you referring to lip-synced performances, or something else? Because almost all the bands on American Bandstand were lip-syncing.

I can't think of any artist today that fits this category. Do you have any examples?

I was referring to performers who are not singing without the use of a back up track when performing live in concert. A lot of female singers do this. You're right, Lip syncing has been used since the 60's on TV. One famous example of it failing was Ashlee Simpson's performance on SNL. Also, there are a lot of recording tricks that are used in the recording process where the artist singing gets the credit for the vocal but in reality it was a back up singer who did most of the vocals as in the case of MV. There was also alligations of whether Paula Abdul sang on her record during the time of Milli Vanilli. Here's that article.

I guess what you're saying about backup tracks does happen, primarily when there's a lot of dancing involved. But that's more of a theatrical performance, than an example of live singing. I'm not really into that pop segment of music, so I don't really encounter it with the music I'm aware of.

34. AUTOMATIC MAN – MICHAEL SEMBELLO
29. CAN’T SHAKE LOOSE – AGNETHA FALTSKOG

Can't say I've ever heard any of these songs.

28. FOOLIN’ – DEF LEPPARD

A band that gets easily lumped in with the Hair metal that was around during the eighties (especially late 80's). I'm sorry if these guys are hair metal than so is AC/DC.

27. TELL HER ABOUT IT – BILLY JOEL

Enjoyable little tune, reminiscent of Dion and the Belmonts back in the 50's and 60's. That's the sound that he was going for on this album (which included Uptown Girl, and the Longest time) and pretty much nailed it.

24. LOVE IS A STRANGER – THE EURYTHMICS

Annie Lennox could sing nursery rhymes and I'd be on board with it. Great voice and can pull off any genre of music she pleases, as her solo stuff would later demonstrate.

23. THE SAFETY DANCE – MEN WITHOUT HATS

S-S-S-S A-A-A-A F-F-F-F E-E-E-E T-T-T-T Y-Y-Y-Y Safety......Dance!

22. BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE – TALKING HEADS

Favorite from a good album, too bad there's not a reunion in the works, I'd go see them in concert. Even the old version.

21. CRUMBLIN’ DOWN – JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP

Now we're talking! This whole album was pretty good in it's own right (it included Pink Houses and the Authority Song) and doesn't sound too overplayed like a Jack and Diane would.

19. SAY IT ISN’T SO – DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES
18. HEART AND SOUL – HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS

The eighties were pretty much known for Blue-eyed soul acts like these guys, Paul Young, Simply Red and a few others. Probably my favorite pop-ish sub-genre.

17. LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD – PAT BENATAR

Who knew the way to beat back a potential thug would be to shake your titties in unison (according to the video),

15. MODERN LOVE – DAVID BOWIE

His Blue-eyed soul phase, and was damn good at it.

13. KING OF PAIN – THE POLICE

Best rock trio ever? You could make the argument. They could do Alternative, Reggae, Ska, and soft rock and do it very well.

6. SAY SAY SAY – PAUL MCCARTNEY AND MICHAEL JACKSON

It was Paul McCartney that gave Michael Jackson the idea to buy up rights to other bands' songs. Didn't think he'd buy the Beatles stuff did ya Paul?

5. UPTOWN GIRL – BILLY JOEL

A song originally about his first girlfriend (some chick named Elle Macpherson) then his smoking hot, supermodel wife Christie Brinkley starred in the video (yeah, I'm jealous!)

2. ALL NIGHT LONG (ALL NIGHT) – LIONEL RICHIE

Party, Caramba, Fiesta, Forever.

1. ISLANDS IN THE STREAM – KENNY ROGERS WITH DOLLY PARTON

A country song written by the Bee Gees, no surprise it's #1 since those guys knew how to write a hit.

38. (SHE’S SEXY) + 17 – STRAY CATS

I've always loved this one. I don't hear it enough.

37. WHY ME – IRENE CARA

Talk about your lost hits! When it started, I kept thinking of the words "Call me!" ... but I knew it wasn't Blondie. Guess I was close.

35. QUEEN OF THE BROKEN HEARTS - LOVERBOY

Another lost hit! Loved this one as a teenager. Still like it.

28. FOOLIN’ – DEF LEPPARD
12. CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE – QUIET RIOT

Two mainstays of my teen years. Pyromania was my #2 album growing up, only behind Van Halen's Fair Warning.

25. THIS TIME – BRYAN ADAMS

In the same way AC/DC is the gold standard I use to define "hard rock", this song has always been to me a quintessential example of straightforward plain jane no frills not alternative not crossover simple unadulterated "rock and roll".

24. LOVE IS A STRANGER – THE EURYTHMICS

Love darker Eurythmics tracks like this one, as opposed to their stuff I don't listen to like "Sisters Are" and "Would I Lie". Didn't know this charted so high!

23. THE SAFETY DANCE – MEN WITHOUT HATS

I wish Sirius would play the Video Version of this song because it doesn't have those awful 'beep boops', which cut into my eardrums like an exacto knife.

https://smile.amazon.com/Safety-Dance-Video-Version-Bonus/dp/B00ANGY6ZG

16. TONIGHT I CELEBRATE MY LOVE – PEABO BRYSON / ROBERTA FLACK

Forgot about this one. Didn't need to be reminded of it though. Yeah it's lovely and all but yawwwwwwwwwwwn.

8. DELIRIOUS - PRINCE

His best album IMHO.

7. MAKING LOVE OUT OF NOTHING AT ALL – AIR SUPPLY

Can NOT hear this song without substituting the lyrics for these ones:

Air Supply: Literal Video Version ("Making Love") from DASjr

"Magic photo dance, da-na-na-na-na..."

3. TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART – BONNIE TYLER

Same as above:

Total Eclipse of the Heart: Literal Video Version *ORIGINAL* from DASjr

"Emo kid is throwing slo-mo dove in my face. I guess that means that he just flipped me the bird."

21. CRUMBLIN’ DOWN – JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP
Now we're talking! This whole album was pretty good in it's own right (it included Pink Houses and the Authority Song) and doesn't sound too overplayed like a Jack and Diane would.

Agreed! "Play Guitar" is another gold standard for what I consider "rock and roll". Also love to crank "Warmer Place To Sleep" and "Serious Business".

17. LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD – PAT BENATAR
Who knew the way to beat back a potential thug would be to shake your titties in unison (according to the video)

Lolz! Another song I can't listen to without substituting these lyrcs:

Love is a Battlefield: Literal Video Version from DASjr

"Booby shake! Booby shake! Booby shake! Booby shake! Tai Bo! Tai Bo! Tai Bo! Tai Bo!"

2. ALL NIGHT LONG (ALL NIGHT) – LIONEL RICHIE
Party, Caramba, Fiesta, Forever.

I've always wondered what that second word is. I don't think it's "caramba". I see on teh intertoobz it's supposedly "karamu"? *shrug*

Karamu: in general, a west African word meaning feast. A Karamu Ya Imani (Feast of Feasts) is a feast that takes place on December 31
