I think the Cars released their greatest hits album during this time frame and You Are the Girl was one of the new tracks on the album.

Their greatest hits came out in 85 with "Tonight She Comes" as the new song. Then they released Door To Door in 87. It had 3 fairly forgettable singles, including this one.

I knew it was sometime inis timeframe but wasn't sure on the exact release date for the greatest hits album. I DO remember the release of the single "You Are the Girl" mainly because as stated it came out during a time when I began to have some pretty serious personal problems.(for a 15-16 year old that is)

26. LUKA - SUZANNE VEGA

I remember watching the Grammys that year when this song won, and not knowing who the hell she was (I was 12 at the time). I sure know now!

25. MARY'S PRAYER - DANNY WILSON

Never heard of it.

24. IT'S NOT OVER ('TIL IT'S OVER) - STARSHIP
23. PAPER IN FIRE - JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP
22. WHO WILL YOU RUN TO - HEART
21. ONE HEARTBEAT - SMOKEY ROBINSON
20. U GOT THE LOOK - PRINCE

U Got the Look being the best of the bunch here, but each artist has had better stuff in the past. Although it would be nice to here a song like 'Paper In Fire' once in a while since Classic Rock radio around here seems to think 'Jack and Diane' is Mellencamp's only song. (and the one I hate the most!)

12. DON'T MEAN NOTHING - RICHARD MARX

Featured this song in a Theme Songs week once. He got Joe Walsh to back up the song on guitar, and Tim Schmidt and Randy Meisner to sing backup. Not bad!

11. TOUCH OF GREY - GRATEFUL DEAD

Okay song, another artist who had much better work (not a deadhead by any stretch, but American Beauty is a great album!)

6. CAN'T WE TRY - DAN HILL (DUET WITH VONDA SHEPARD)
5. ONLY IN MY DREAMS - DEBBIE GIBSON

Gag!

4. HERE I GO AGAIN - WHITESNAKE

Still a cranker to this day!

39. STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART - THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND

thought this was Bruce Springsteen, sounds a lot like him.

35. GENERAL HOSPI-TALE - THE AFTERNOON DELIGHTS

could this be the second 'rap' to hit the top 40 (behind "Rapture")? what a piece of crap!

31. I'VE DONE EVERYTHING FOR YOU - RICK SPRINGFIELD
13. JESSIE'S GIRL - RICK SPRINGFIELD

Working Class Dog... still love it today.

28. DRAW OF THE CARDS - KIM CARNES

WTF is this? this can only be explained by the massive success of her previous single "Bette Davis Eyes". i can't imagine this song would've charted otherwise. sounds like a non-lp b-side throwaway track.

27. PRIVATE EYES - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES
26. SUPER FREAK - RICK JAMES

back-to-back classics

24. REALLY WANNA KNOW YOU - GARY WRIGHT

forgot this existed. i guess he isn't a one hit wonder after all...

21. IN YOUR LETTER - REO SPEEDWAGON

loved Hi Infidelity when i was 12. hate hate hate it now.

15. THEME FROM "THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO" - JOEY SCARBURY

guilty pleasure.

14. THE BEACH BOYS MEDLEY - THE BEACH BOYS

aside from "Kokomo" (which isn't great, but it's ok), i think the Beach Boys should have taken the entire 80s decade off.

I like a lot of her songs. Also like most of Lionel's songs. This song is pure crap.
Couldn't agree more. They both have great songs, and some cheesy but catchy tunes. But Endless Love - holy Jesus. I was working summers in my dad's shop, and he had the radio tuned to an agreeable inoffensive station - which meant top 40 - as background music. So that syrupy, sappy song got played every hour that year. I was still a teenager; if I was older, it might have been considered a popular wedding song, but at the time, it was just old-people's music.

Endless Love was a lot better than anything from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack.

They went to Lionel for a song. That's what he gave them
