Tony Defries managed David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Mott The Hoople early in their careers. In 1976, Defries became John Mellencamp's manager and produced his first album, Chestnut Street Incident. He also changed Mellencamp's name to "Johnny Cougar," later "John Cougar." Defries explained that "Mellenacmp" was a "hayseed name" but "Johnny Cougar" made the singer sound like a "cool cat." If I was Mellencamp, I would have strongly objected to the new name! In 1983, after he'd had six top-40 hits and a number-one song (Jack & Diane), Mellencamp convinced the executives at Riva Records to start billing him as John Cougar Mellenacmp. In 1991, he finally dropped the "Cougar" name.

That first album included several original songs and remakes of Jailhouse Rock, Oh Pretty Woman, Twentieth Century Fox and Do You Believe In Magic. It sold only 12,000 copies. In 2010, Mellencamp released a four-CD box set, On The Rural Route 7609 – and none of the songs from his first album were included. Here is Mellencamp's 1976 version of Jailhouse Rock. It appeared on the soundtrack of the 1992 movie Honeymoon In Vegas.

I like 13 and 6, but only as guilty pleasures/nostalgia, not because they are particularly good

Better late than never:

Good 16
Okay 7
Bad 17

40: LOVE OR LET ME BE LONELY - PAUL DAVIS

It was lucky to peak this high

This weeks surprises.
#55 a surprise since this was redone in a hidious way and made #1
#81 Canadian group -- not really a surpise.

I hereby fulfill your expectation – and you know I'm not the expectation fulfiller I used to be. Words reached #42 (not #92) on the Hot 100 in August 1982. The song reached #4 on the Top 30 of "Hit Radio 11" KRLA in Pasadena/Los Angeles.

I took at peek at the chart and this was the week "Words" fell from #42 to #92. These drops were brutal.

So Words fell from #42 to #92. Two songs dropped 81 points on the Hot 100. On the June 4 2022 chart, We Cry Together by Kendrick Lamar and Taylour Paige – no, she is not Canadian – dropped from #16 to #97. It had debuted at #16 the previous week. On the July 2 2022 chart, Texts Go Green by Drake dropped from #13 to #94. It had debuted at #13 the previous week. Two high debuts – and each song was on the chart for only two weeks. To quote somebody else: BROKEN CHART!
