80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

#44 Gino Vannelli "Black Cars"
That's a good tune. Soooo close! It should have made it.
#61 Hooters "All You Zombies"
I always loved this one. I thought it would have been a little bit higher. Maybe 50 or 45.
#72 Dokken "Alone Again"
That got a lot of airplay, I thought it would have just cracked 40.
I remember surfing channels (when we didn't have cable) and seeing Menudo on the Spanish-Language channel in town, and not understanding a word of it.
Every once and a while I would turn on Telemundo when something like Gooonies or Ghostbusters, I'll switch over to see if I can translate just to mess with the Mrs.
#105 Talking Heads "Road to Nowhere" - (peaked at this position)
Bull. Shit!
I thought that would have made 40 easily.

I looked and the song tanked in other countries too. Not good for a debut song from a new album.

I completely agree. Both tracks should have charted. "We Close Our Eyes" stalled at #41. #41 stalls always get me because I generally believe the songs deserved to be in the 40.

I saw several Vitamin Z ads in Billboard when I was researching the Bubbling Under chart for this week.
I saw those, too when I went looking for a pic of the promo item I mentioned ( surprisingly, there were none...although a couple of the ads had a pic of a pill bottle that was pretty much the same thing ).

As Sad mentioned, Go West had some success later, but at that point they should have already been several hits in.

And yeah - the Men At Work thing is just a mystery. They hadn't been gone THAT long. And I liked the song, but all their quirky charm was missing. But stuff like "Overkill" ( one of my favorite songs of the 80's ) pointed to a less wacky Men At Work, so I dunno. I'm sure their label was shocked at what a stiff it was. I dunno if that album's even easily available on CD.

I can't seem to remember any other mid-summer #1's, so I only have one guess for 1980.

Mickey Gilley's Stand By Me, a remake of a 1961 #4 hit by former Drifters lead singer Ben E. King, went to number one on the country chart in August 1980 and reached #22 on the Hot 100. It was written by King, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. King had offered the song to the Drifters but Lover Patterson, the group's road manager, didn't like the song – so King recorded it himself. (Patterson's real first name was Lovet.)

Stand By Me
has been recorded by more than 300 artists including John Lennon, Julian Lennon, Gene Chandler, Barbara Lewis, Little Eva, Otis Redding, Otis Rush, Chuck Jackson, Wilbert Harrison, Jackie Wilson, Billy Mize, Carl Carlton, Meat Loaf, Freddy Weller, Aaron Neville, Ronnie Milsap, David Hasselhoff (!), Billy Joe Royal, Engelbert Humperdinck, Cheap Trick, Jay & The Americans and Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs. One of my favorite versions was a #12 hit in February 1967 by Dwight "Spyder" Turner. He does impersonations of Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Eddie Kendricks, Melvin Franklin, David Ruffin, Billy Stewart, Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson and Chuck Jackson. The song was 5:40 in length. It was cut to 2:47 for release as a single and only five of the nine impressions were included. Here is the album version:

The 10 songs below the 100 from 7/5/1980:

Bubbling Under The HOT 100
#101 Rockie Robbins "You and Me" (entered the chart at #90 on July 19, 1980, peaked at #80, #9 R&B)
#102 G.Q. "Sitting in the Park" (peaked at #101, #9 R&B)
#103 Gene Chandler "Does She Have a Friend" (peaked at #101, #28 R&B)
#104 J.C. Cunningham "The Pyramid Song" (no Wiki page, peaked at this position)
#105 Odyssey "Don't Tell Me, Tell Her" (peaked at this position, #44 R&B)
#106 Al Jarreau "Never Givin' Up" (peaked at #102, #26 R&B)
#107 Gary Numan & Tubeway Army "Are Friends Electric" (peaked at #105)
#108 Brick "All the Way" (peaked at #106, #38 R&B)
#109 Def Leppard "Rock Brigade" (peaked at #106)
#110 Ian Hunter "We Gotta Get Out of Here" (peaked at #108)

Observations:
  • Only one song made it into the 100.
  • There are several R&B songs that didn't chart high on either chart.
  • Interesting to see an early Def Leppard single on the chart.

9 out of 40. Lots of Urban Cowboy Country and Yacht Rock (none of which I was really into).

#107 Gary Numan & Tubeway Army "Are Friends Electric" (peaked at #105)

#109 Def Leppard "Rock Brigade" (peaked at #106)
Very interesting!

#104 J.C. Cunningham "The Pyramid Song" (no Wiki page, peaked at this position)

On Scotti Brothers Records, same as Weird Al. Described as "Country - novelty singer". (Scotti did non-novelty as well like ELO & Survivor)

I found the song too. It's about pyramid schemes.
