'70s On 7 playlist

Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles 1955-1989 and Top Pop Singles 1990-2022 books include lists of the top 50 artists of each decade. The rankings are based on chart performance: weeks at number one, weeks in the top ten, weeks in the top 40 and weeks on the Hot 100.

The top ten artists of the 1970s are Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bee Gees, Carpenters, Chicago, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Neil Diamond and Olivia Newton-John. Elvis Presley ranks 11th. The Doobie Brothers are 30th. How could a list of the top American artists of the 1970s – a list compiled by Billboard – not include James Brown, Elvis Presley and the Doobie Brothers? What criteria were used? I wants ta know!

This song is quite interesting in how it managed to stay in the hot 100 for 6 months in 1979 including 19 weeks in the top 40 including 1 at #1. It debuted on May 19th and dropped off the 100 after Nov 17th. During it's accent to #1 it was passed by 4 #1 hits (songs debuts after it but passed it on. the chart):
  • "Bad Girls"
  • "Good Times"
  • "My Sharona"
  • "Rise"
"Sad Eyes" passed "Rise" again and hit #1 on Oct 6th knocking off "My Sharona". It stayed 1 week knocked off by "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough". Here is the path through the top 100:

During the summer of 1979 radio stations must have kept playing it at an increasing rate for most of the summer. Sales must have also increased and people must not have got sick of it. Songs that debuted around the same time peaked in July and fell off the charts which is more typical of top 40 radio. Hearing the song it's not a bad song but it is hardly anything special. Strange it had the weird success it did.

Give Me Just A Little More Time by Detroit R&B group The Chairmen Of The Board reached #3 on the Hot 100 in March 1970. It is not on the list – but it should be. The lead singer was General Johnson. Yes, that was his real name: General Norman Johnson (1941-2010). From 1961 to 1967 he was lead singer of the Showmen, who reached #61 on the Hot 100 in January 1962 with It Will Stand, which Johnson had written.
