'50s Gold playlist

Jo Stafford's You Belong To Me was number one for five weeks in September-October 1952 and spent 17 weeks in the top ten. It has been featured in the movies The Last Picture Show (1971), Tin Men (1987), The Deep Blue Sea (2011), The Nun (2018), The Irishman (2019) and Don't Worry Darling (2022) and in episodes of Fallout, The White Lotus and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

This version by Jersey City quintet The Duprees reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1962.

I was posting about this earlier in the day. The Duprees was the first version of "You Belong to Me" I heard and it was on the Solid Gold Saturday Night Show with Dick Bartley. I have now heard it several times on the 50's Gold Cool Bobby B Doo Wop Show. I still remember that Sold Gold Saturday Night Show. After the Duprees, the next song was "Shake" by the Shadows of Knight. At that time, another first time ever heard for me

In the 1986 movie Down & Out In Beverly Hills, Barbara Whiteman (played by Bette Midler) sings You Belong To Me to homeless man Jerry Baskin (played by Nick Nolte) right after they....uhh....well, that's not important right now.

I had a friend back in the day who used to say "a hole is a hole" - this was his philosophy on dating. Not choosy. One time when we were in public, around some older ladies, he wanted to say it, but refrained. Instead he said, "You remember that old song 'Que sera sera, whatever will be will be'? I want to say something kinda like that." And from that day forward, instead of saying "a hole is a hole" he would sing "que sera sera ...."

08 17 THE KINGSTON TRIO - TOM DOOLEY

The Fools, a legendary local band who went national a couple times in the 80s, did a disgusting version of this one in 1990 about having sex with a dead body

Would this be called "This Week in 1950" on my app. I would listen. Tommy Edwards "It's All in the Game" is a great song

Jiles Perry Richardson Jr. released two singles, Beggar To A King (October 16 1957) and Monkey Song (You Made A Monkey Out Of Me) (May 23 1958) as Jape Richardson. They failed to chart. (Maybe he didn't know the meaning of the word "jape.") Then he wrote and recorded Chantilly Lace and released it as The Big Bopper. It peaked at #6 on the November 3 1958 Billboard Hot 100.

Jerry Lee Lewis's remake of Chantilly Lace was certainly not country – but it topped the country chart for three weeks in April-May 1972 and reached #43 on the Hot 100. The uncredited background singers are Joe Babcock, Dolores Edgen, Millie Kirkham, Ricky Page, Hurshel Wiginton and Trish Williams. This was recorded in a single take.

Tommy Edwards' original version of It's All In The Game, written in 1912 by Carl Sigman (words) and Vice President Charles Dawes (music), peaked at #18 on Billboard's September 15 1951 Most Played By Disc Jockeys chart. (Tony Bennett's Because Of You was number one.) The 1958 version is much better. Obviously. It was number one for six weeks in September-October 1958.
