Last night Mrs. Bag and I saw "The Favourite" at a special free sneak preview for Top Brass members. Well, the film opened 2 weeks ago on a handful of screens, so it isn't much of a sneak preview, but it won't open at the local Drafthouse for another 2 weeks.

The film was interesting, but not something I would watch again. I love Olivia Coleman from her work with Mitchell and Webb, and I loved Lanthimos's "The Lobster". I was a little disappointed by this movie based on their involvement with it.

But I love when the Drafthouse throws a party for Top Brass members. We didn't know it was going to be a party until we got there. They gave us holiday pint glasses, rubber duckies and candy canes on our way in. Before the film started they announced they would comp $25 food and beverage on our bills. And about 1/3rd of the way into the film they brought us little snack cakes with blueberries and cinnamon.

Last night I saw "Burning", a new Korean film based on a story by Haruki Murakami. It was very good. I can't think of anything else to say about it that wouldn't be a spoiler.

Last night I saw "People's Republic of Desire". It's a documentary from China about YY, a streaming site where people pay other people ... for no good reason. It isn't porn. It isn't video gaming. It's just people watching other people beg for money, and then paying them money. Each streamer has fans, and the big streamers have patrons, and the really big streamers have bosses. There's an annual competition to see who can get the most donations. People lose their minds over this. At it's core, it's a pyramid scheme for hope porn. Poor people give up their money to watch other poor people become rich. Well made documentary on a bewildering subject.

Next I saw "Dial Code Santa Claus" (aka "3615 code Père Noël", "Deadly Games", "Game Over", "Hide and Freak"), a 1989 Christmas horror film from France. Basically it's "Home Alone" (released one year before "Home Alone") except the bungling burglars are an insane, murderous Santa and the kid has honeycombed his mansion with secret passages and booby traps. It was a great movie.

Friday night I saw "Black Christmas", introduced by Joe Bob Briggs.

The movie was interesting. It's a Christmas horror film directed by Bob Clark, the same guy that directed "A Christmas Story" (and "Porky's"). Lots of big name actors ended up in it, but my favorite part was when we saw the old telephone switches. Switches be trippin.

Joe Bob Briggs is an anachronism. He used to write movie reviews of b-movies in the 80s and adopted a redneck personae to do it. He clearly enjoys kung fu, horror and exploitation movies, but he had to make fun of their audience to write about them. Once the internet happened, b-movie fans found each other and realized they could appreciate stuff outside the mainstream without shame. The redneck act is just insulting now.

Tonight I saw "Anna and the Apocalypse", a new musical zombie romantic comedy set at Christmas. I dug the beginning and ending, but the songs in the middle had really annoying rhyme schemes. I think the songwriters wrote them first while they were learning how to write songs.

Seriously? You have seen all this obscure stuff and not Die Hard? It's a Christmas classic.

There is a sign outside my eyeballs that says: "You must be this weird to ride." "Die Hard" was not nearly weird enough. Seeing it for the first time 30 years after it was released was weird enough.

Meme's disdain for populism makes me think of this gem from the past:

Last night I saw "Neverending Man: Hayao Miyazaki". It was great. It's a bunch of intimate footage of Miyazaki over the years after his most recent retirement announcement. It shows him struggling to work with CGI animators on "Boro the Caterpillar" (which is only shown at the Studio Ghibli museum). It shows him struggling with growing old, his friends all dying while he smokes constantly. It is brutally honest about his failure to develop any successors, dooming Studio Ghibli to die with him. He is a man in his 70s and he knows he may not live to see a feature film completed, but he can't stop himself from making another one. His only alternative is to sit around and just get older.

He'd be the perfect candidate to join DRC.

For the past couple of days, I have been watching a few movies.

I finally saw "Geostorm". Even though the film bombed, actually the film was kinda entertaining. I believe it was better than ID2 and the latest Jurrasic Park film.

Saturday, I saw "Mary Poppins Returns". The film wasn't as great as the original, no original songs. But it was still enjoyable and I could see being a classic in a few years.

Last night I watch, "Clock With The House In Its Walls" and first off the title is misleading. But the film was an entertaining to watch and Jack Black, Cate Blanchett had some great roles.

About to watch Venom.
