Movie round up!
I saw 2 good ones and a stinker over the past few days. First the good.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer - Oh boy did I like this one. It's probably a top 5 2017 movie for me. It's from the guy who made Dogtooth and The Lobster and like those it's kinda out there. Some doctor with the perfect family forms a relationship with a teen and that kid goes on to wreak havoc on his whole family. It's a little slow to start but not at all boring, more building the anticipation for when the hammer will drop. 5/5
Professor Marston and the Wonder Women - I had no idea who created Wonder Woman. Apparently it was some college professor. This is mostly a sweet love story. The professor and his wife (Mr and Mrs Marston) teach psych and a female student they use as an assistant falls in love with the professor's wife. They wind up forming a family together and the professor gets the idea for Wonder Woman from living with the 2 women. There is a through line about the Wonder Woman comic being too sexual for the time and facing censorship but this movie is really about a loving polygamous relationship and its struggles. The neat part is that it's not about a man with 2 wives but more about Mrs Marston having both a husband and wife. It's very sweet and worth a watch. A million times better than the actual Wonder Woman movie that came out in the summer. 4/5
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - I didn't like this one. I guess this was supposed to be a drama with some comedic elements but it just didn't work for me. I think the writer/director, as a British guy, watched a few too many episodes of The Andy Griffith Show as research into how to portray a police station on film. And the main character is a dick. You are supposed to feel bad for her cause her daughter was raped and murdered but she has a living second child that she seems to not care about at all, to the extent where she actually puts him in physical danger. There was one funny character. The main character's ex husband has a new ditsy girlfriend who is played 100% for laughs and is entertaining. I can understand why this is such an Academy darling though. It deals with rape, makes all cops and average citizens from middle America look like racists/incompetent assholes and the only people even slightly intelligent are women or minorities. Perfect Oscar bait. I would have given this a 1 but the last 15-20 minutes redeemed it a bit and are the best part of the whole thing. 2/5
I have a bunch more Oscar contenders to watch. Molly's Game, I Tonya, The Phantom Thread, The Shape of Water, The Darkest Hour and Call Me by Your Name are all still on deck.
