fudge is delicious! i haven't had it in years. as a kid we would always vacation in wildwood nj and along with all the great boardwalk rides and the beach, the food was the best part. they had a bunch of fudge and taffy spots but we always went to laura's fudge.

Where were you living when you vacationed there?

philly burbs. a very small city (hell, it's not even classified as a city, it's a "village") called huntingdon valley that borders NE philly. we went to wildwood cause that's where my mom vacationed as a child. it's known as one of the more fun jersey beach spots because it has the best boardwalk in terms of rides but it's also kinda trashy. in this case her nostalgia worked in my favor.

Now I vaguely recall you were in Philly. How long did you live there? I grew up in north Jersey, I've vacationed in Wildwood, it became a major teen hangout, and it's not far from Atlantic City. Seaside Heights beach was closer to us, though, and they also had the boardwalk and Seaside Park. Seaside was destroyed by Sandy, then burned down right after they rebuilt.

oh neat. yea most of my friends would go to either AC or ocean city. like i said, my mom's nostalgia kept us going to wildwood 4 to 6 times per year. as a kid i remember thinking how boring AC and OC was when i would compare the boardwalks. my grandfather wound up buying a little house in wildwood. my mom's side of the family was pretty poor, my mom was the first to get even a college degree let along a masters and phd. but back then wildwood was kinda depressed so they were able to scrape together and get it for pennies on the dollar. by the time i came around my mom didn't have any interest in staying in her father's house so we would always stay in a 50s style motel (wildwood was/is known for them) called the lurae.

i have nothing but good memories about our family trips to wildwood. i consider it to be a delightful part of my childhood.

and to bring it back to food...along with the laura's fudge there were 2 other boardwalk spots we would always go to that i remember being delicious. first was just a french fry stand called curly's fries:

that had the most delicious fries. and then there was mack's pizza that i still hold as my all time favorite pizza:

so the lurae, curley's fries, laura's fudge and mack's pizza along with the beach and boardwalk rides and of course doing all this with family was what gave me such fond memories of wildwood nj.

Chicho's on Virginia Beach left an impression with me as the best pizza I've ever had. Of course, real NYC pizza - which can be found in north Jersey (and maybe south like Mack's) - is a classic that is somehow not reproducible anywhere else.
