If they could make this work with regular ipods, it would be really trick. Not so trick with just iphones, as you already are paying $30 month for data charges. IF the iphone did NOT require you to carry a data charge, THEN i could see this being really neat. How often do you not get cell service where the sirius/xm app wouldn't work? I guess all you are gaining is the POSSIBILITY of getting howard, as it is not confirmed yet.

It won't use data or WiFi, it is a sat radio and will just have the GUI on the iPhone.

Exactly. It turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into a Dock and Play Radio for the car. :bigclap:

I do like that they're using the XM stuff as the basis for this, but I bet this spells bad news for the Stiletto. (An iPod touch or iPhone with the Sirius app and this new dock is basically a Stiletto unit, right?)

It would be nice if this could be activated as another Sirius unit, but I bet for someone like me (Siletto 2, Starmate 4) then i'd have to start up an XM account with the $12.95 or whatever it is now.

Sooner or later this won't matter...probably later.

Clearly this dock, has a XM chipset, so basically all you are using the iPhone/iPod Touch for is to interface with it via the Siriux XM app. So again no wifi or data required, though once you remove it from the dock, you would once again stream via Wifi or 3G/Edge.

I would assume that it cost them a lot less money to produce a dock with a sat chipset than a whole radio.

Also to those that aren't excited, then I have to say your WICK is wet! How many iPod Touch's and iPhone's has Apple sold? This means all of those owners are now potential subscribers by simply buying a dock. We all know how iPhone and iPod Touch folks love to buy accessories. I see this as a very, very positive move. One of the best I've seen Sirius make in a very long while.

I know I am certainly down with one and will likely drop my Express RC and subscribe my XM iPod Dock instead.

Except there probably won't be any recording, or replay functionality. There is no way Apple is gonna let an app save songs on their device that you could be buying from the itunes store. I suppose a dock could be made that would make the iphone a portable sat rad player. It would be tough on the battery though. I like the sound of this, but lets hope the Stiletto isn't going away.

, you aren't using DATA through your plan, you are pulling it right from the satellites and actually streaming it through the iPod Touch.

Maybe I am missing something. Why does it matter that you are not using Data? It doesn't cost any more, and IIRC, the stream with the sirius app sounds BETTER than a sat connection.

When you get an iphone, you HAVE to get data. Are there really THAT many times where you don't have a phone signal, and can't stream?

I see this being more geared toward an ipod touch, rather than a iphone. And like I said earlier, if they REALLY want to get a large number of apple users, make this work with ipods.

Although it will not convince me to get in bed with the devil, I can certainly see the upside for Sirius XM, Millions of potential new subscribers with minimal investment.

Have you ever taken a long trip across country? Ever been outside a major centre? Ever tried to use your 3G coverage there?

Also, you can get stuff like MLB play by play, Howard, etc. which are not streamed by Sirius XM for various reasons. The internet stream by Sirius XM is a subset of their programming.

I don't own an iphone, thats why i am asking. I haven't got the slightest clue as I have never used data on a phone. I do know that I get service on my phone 99% of the time, and I have traveled basically everywhere east of KY. I don't know how 3G works, but if you have phone service, don't you have 3G?

No. 3G has much less coverage area than standard digital phone coverage. It takes time and money to upgrade the digital towers to 3G.

Ah, I now see....So basically you can ONLY listen to the stern app if you have 3G, NOT just phone coverage.

i found a map showing 3G coverage. I now see why this is usefull, and am all for it.

I don't think so.

I think that you'll be able to use the dock in conjunction with your IPHONE to turn it into an actual SATELITTE receiver, not over wifi or 3G. I think there will be a satelittle antenna connected to the dock.

So, basically, instead of buying a Starmate, you can use your ipod in the exact same fashion.

i was actually talking about the streaming application. Can that ONLY be used if you have 3G?

I understand how the iphone satelitte dock will work.

This dock will BOMB.
after thinking about it for a while, i think that i agree with that. its only practical for the itouch owners and not for iphone users.

if you have an iphone locked in a contract with at&t, what's the gain of using this dock with the iphone? you already have to pay $30 a month to use the data on the iphone automatically. you are always on. there are streaming apps like wunder radio and pocket tunes that already stream sirius, sirius canada, and xm. there are other free streaming radio programs in the app store. if this is just a ploy to get the stern listeners i hear that you can already do that with a shoutcast stream. as long as you have coverage with a cell tower, you can always get satellite radio, 3g is not required. i travelled through the middle part of the country recently listening to a radio station on the edge network on pocket tunes (i'm not with at&t). for most iphone users, this dock will not do anything except be a branded sirixm iphone/touch car dock.

i have an iphone and an itouch, but i am especially leery that sirixm might require paying for a second reciever if the device is only going to be used as a gui. i would only be interested in this so i could replace my stiletto car dock because sirius doesn't seem to want to update the stiletto 100 anymore.

ehh..so really all iphone users get is a full sirius/xm schedule. So again, this is nothing GREAT unless you have an ipod touch.

I am amazed at how many of you don't see to get this simple concept! This would allow you to replace existing equipment if you wanted to do so.

I love the general statements.. this will bomb! I would imagine if they counted on some you that are stuck in the past that is true. However, most iPhone/iPod Touch owners tend to be pretty damn tech savvy. Will this mean 3 million new subscribers, I doubt it. However, right now their subscriber base is eroding. If this helps balance that out. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! ON what bases can someone say this will bomb, please enlighten us!

I see the light and this thing will be huge and most likely just the begining.
