Today is the unofficial kickoff to summer in these parts. It is officially a day off to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday (May 24th). But people got pissed when May 24th landed on a Wednesday. So it became the Monday prior to May 24th. This year it is the earliest it can be since the 24th is a Sunday. It always works out to be 1 week prior to Memorial Day. Queen Victoria has been dead for some time so it officially is supposed to celebrate the birthday of the reigning monarch ... this year King Chuck.
Canadians usually refer to it as the May 2-4 weekend. The 24 comes from the date the 24th but we usually refer to it as the perfect opportunity to drink a 2-4 of beer (if you are so inclined).
