Suzanne Vega's original a-cappella recording of Tom's Diner – named for Tom's Restaurant, founded in 1940 in Manhattan by Greek immigrant Athanasios "Tom" Glikas and used for the exterior shots of the fictional Monks Café on Seinfeld – was included in the January 1984 Fast Track Musical Magazine and was the opening track of her April 1987 Solitude Standing. In 1990, British electronic music producers English Nick Batt and Neal Slateford, as D.N.A., released a new mix of the song featuring instrumentation by Soul II Soul. It reached #5 on the December 22 1990 Hot 100. Here is the original:

Along with Suzanne Vega, I was big on Natalie Merchant. Both with her solo career and lead in 10000 Maniacs. Saw her in concert in Madison somewhere around the same time as Suzanne Vega.
I would have 10000 Maniacs In My Tribe in my CD living room master collection but I lost it somewhere in the house. I did check it out of the library once in the summer
