1984 this week.

Sunglasses at Night: "It's not cool to wear your sunglasses at night .... unless you need to wear your sunglasses at night. Then its not cool to take them off". Thanx for the very useful advise Marc Goodman.

According to Alan, Huey Lewis "If this was it" was the one of 5 top 20 hits and 1 of 4 top 10 hits from Sports and their 3rd straight #1. I don't believe any of those hits hit #1.

Thanx Alan for again telling the story about Jump For My Love almost being a Julio Inglacious song. I figure this must mean we had a 1984 countdown recent for me to remember same comments on the same song.

Here is a list of all the number-one singles from the Sports album:

Hunter got the other details correct, though: the album yielded four top-ten singles and five top-20 hits. (Walking On A Thin Line reached #18.) A sixth single, Finally Found A Home, failed to chart. The band's number ones were The Power Of Love (August 1985), Stuck With You (September 1986) and Jacob's Ladder (March 1987).

The first single by Huey Lewis & The American Express was the horrendously titled Exodisco (1979), a disco version of Ernest Gold's theme song for the 1960 movie Exodus. The single bombed and the band wisely decided to abandon disco and change their name to Huey Lewis & The News. Listen at your own risk.

40. BOYS DO FALL IN LOVE - ROBIN GIBB
38. 10-9-8 - FACE TO FACE

I think this is my first time hearing these two. And hopefully my last.

35. IF THIS IS IT - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS

I have a tape from '84 of two friends and I doing an acapella parody of this song: "If this is shit (doo wop) please let me know (oh oh) It's starting to smell so let me know if this is shit (doo wop)..."

29. MISSING YOU - JOHN WAITE

I almost picked this as my guess for #1 this week against my friend's son. Should I have? Read on...

2. GHOSTBUSTERS - RAY PARKER JR.

Glad I didn't choose Missing You. I chose this one and it's my best showing yet! But was it enough to win?....

1. WHEN DOVES CRY - PRINCE

Nope! My friend's son chose this song. The second time he's nailed number one. Damn he's good!

It was pretty intense not hearing either of our choices all the way up to #3. I was on the edge of my seat!

My choices over the last five weeks: #55, (not on Hot 100), #20, #6, #2.

His choices over the last five weeks: #2, #4, #1, #30, #1.

These are the songs I knew back in '84 from the bottom list:

#50 Genesis "Taking It All Too Hard"
#63 Quiet Riot "Mama, Weer All Crazee Now" (owned the album)
#64 Scorpions "Still Loving You"
#69 Yes "It Can Happen" (owned the album)
#83 Elvis Costello "The Only Flame in Town" (featuring Daryl Hall goodness!)
#89 Bon Jovi "She Don't Know Me"
#92 Def Leppard "Bringin' On The Heartbreak (Remix)" (owned the album with the original version)
#97 Survivor "The Moment Of Truth" (from one of the Rocky films I think)

These are the ones I didn't know back in '84, but I know them now:

#56 Newcleus "Jam On It"
#99 REM "South Central Rain"
("sorry.... sorry... sorry... sorry...")

Yeah, no Beavis this week. None of the ballads really make my skin crawl. They're bad, but not Beavis-level bad.

22: HOLDING BACK THE YEARS - SIMPLY RED

Mark Goodman called this their most successful song. They had two #1s, this one and "If You Don't Know Me By Now". The latter was certified Gold, the former was not. What??

10: OPPORTUNITIES (LET'S MAKE LOTS OF MONEY) - THE PET SHOP BOYS

Mark Goodman said this song went to #1 in the UK. Then called it one of the only PSB songs to do better in the US (#8 peak) than the UK. What??

5: INVISIBLE TOUCH - GENESIS

My friend's son's pick this week. He's picked a top 5 song every single week except once.

4: PAPA DON'T PREACH - MADONNA

I narrowed it down to "True Colors", "Greatest Love Of All" and this one. The other two weren't even on the Hot 100 this week (Love peaked in May, Colors peaked in Oct). Thank goodness I picked this one!

1: GLORY OF LOVE - PETER CETERA

This is was in the original 8 I'd narrowed it down to. I eliminated this one first. Oops!

#47 Mary Jane Girls "Walk Like A Man"

Yes THAT "Walk Like A Man". Complete with cross-dressing video. The guy walks up to a cop with his top down (exposing his hairy chest and no breasts). The cop says, "Excuse me lady..."

#95 Doctor And The Medics "Spirit In The Sky"

Yes THAT "Spirit In The Sky". Imagine Dead Or Alive covering it.

Will never make the top 40
#43 Queen "A Kind Of Magic"
#47 Mary Jane Girls "Walk Like A Man"
#56 Chaka Khan "Love Of A Lifetime"

Heard the exact same countdown last year.

My old comments: 80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

38: ROUTE 101 - HERB ALPERT

I read that there was a promo video for this album made by Stan Freberg, so I had to watch it. It was worth it. If you like early 80s offbeat comedy in the style of Kentucky Fried Movie and Airplane, look it up (search youtube for herb stan fandango)

33: JACK AND DIANE - JOHN COUGAR

My friend's son's guess at this week's #1. His lowest pick yet. It was one of the six I had narrowed my choices down to.

29: AND I'M TELLING YOU I'M NOT GOING - JENNIFER HOLIDAY

Wow she can sing! Whitney before Whitney. The song does nothing for me, but that voice is sweet.

20: DO I DO - STEVIE WONDER

Mark Goodman said we'd be hearing the short version of "Do I Do" and wouldn't be hearing Stevie rapping or Dizzy Gillespie wail away on the trumpet. He lied.

7: EVEN THE NIGHTS ARE BETTER - AIR SUPPLY

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

1: EYE OF THE TIGER - SURVIVOR

The six I narrowed my choices down to were Abracadbra, Jack & Diane, Truly, Up Where We Belong, Ebony & Ivory and Eye Of The Tiger. I went with Tiger. My first ever correct guess at #1. Woohoo!

#62 707 "Mega Force"

Pretty rockin' (once it finally starts). Reminds me of Y&T or Autograph.

#66 Jerry Reed "She Got The Goldmine (I Got The Shaft)"

The music and singing are terrible. But man the title and the lyrics are great!

While she's livin' like a queen on alimony
I'm workin' two shifts eatin' baloney

#74 Carly Simon "Why"

Urban Carly?! Surprised the video doesn't have breakdancers.

#76 Walter Murphy "Theme From ET"

WOW! What a Star Wars rip-off! Or more accurately, what a Meco rip-off...

#83 Billy Squier "Emotions In Motion"

People rip on Billy's video for "Rock Me Tonight" (and rightly so), but if you watch the video for this song, he was making the same exact dance moves in this one - four years before "Rock Me Tonight". Watch at 0:53 and 3:13. Exact same flitting around, pole humping, etc.

#90 Toronto "Your Daddy Don't Know"

Does Jesse's Girl know they ripped her song off?

Won't make the top 40
#47 Missing Persons "Words"
#50 April Wine "Enough Is Enough"
#58 Roberta Flack "I'm The One"
#62 707 "Mega Force"
#64 Afrika Bambaataa "Planet Rock"
#65 Aldo Nova "Foolin' Yourself"
#66 Jerry Reed "She Got The Goldmine (I Got The Shaft)"
#67 Dayton "Hot Fun In The Summertime"
#68 Clash "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"
#70 Axe "Now Or Never"
#73 Queen "Calling All Girls"
#74 Carly Simon "Why"
#75 Bill Champlin "Sara"
#76 Walter Murphy "Theme From ET"
#77 Dolly Parton "I Will Always Love You"
#79 Foreigner "Luanne"
#80 Joe Fagin "Younger Days"
#81 Steve Winwood "Still In The Game"
#82 Nicolette Larson "I Only Want To Be With You"
#83 Billy Squier "Emotions In Motion"
#84 John Denver "Seasons Of The Heart"
#85 Cheap Trick "If You Want My Love"
#89 Christopher Atkins "How Can I Live Without Her"
#90 Toronto "Your Daddy Don't Know"
#93 Dr Hook "Loveline"
#99 Reddings "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay"
#100 Ashford & Simpson "Street Corner"

Wow she can sing! Whitney before Whitney. The song does nothing for me, but that voice is sweet.

I hated this song. I would have given it the Bevis & Butthead if I was awarding it.

20: DO I DO - STEVIE WONDER

Mark Goodman said we'd be hearing the short version of "Do I Do" and wouldn't be hearing Stevie rapping or Dizzy Gillespie wail away on the trumpet. He lied.

I wondered about that. The song went on and on and on.

#90 Toronto "Your Daddy Don't Know"

Does Jesse's Girl know they ripped her song off?

I don't see the similarities between the songs. The song was pretty big up in Canada. Top 40.

Won't make the top 40
#50 April Wine "Enough Is Enough"
#90 Toronto "Your Daddy Don't Know"
#99 Reddings "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay"

These 3 are cool songs although I think the Dock of the Bay is a re-release. I am sure Otis had that one in the top 40 in the 70s. The top 2 were big in Canada (and rightfully so).

Jack and DIane is really the only John Mellencamp song I can truly say I hate. Only because classic rock radio around here (that I quit listening to years ago) believes that's his only song! He has much better songs, but that song get the most airplay.

J&D was his biggest in terms of chart position (#1). But as Alan said (and given he said it, I have no idea if it is actually true -- one does not take their facts as facts) Hurt So Good spent the most time in the top 10 than any other song in the decade. Would that make it his biggest song?

@IdRatherBeSkiing The Toronto song's opening riff sounds to me like a bastardization of the opening riff of Jesse's girl. High - low -middle. But when Toronto hits the verse it's even less bastardized - the guitar gets muted (just like Jesse's Girl) and the four first notes are the same. Just taking the concept that each riff has 4 notes, here's how it breaks down:

Jesse's = 44 22 33 (rest) 1 133 44.
Toronto = 44 22 33 (rest) 1 1 1 3 2 (then next time it's even closer) 44 22 33 (rest) 1 1 33.

Dock Of The Bay is a re-recording by Otis' sons. From the oh-so-reliable Wikipedia: "The Reddings was an American funk, soul and disco band, founded by Otis Redding's sons Dexter (bass and vocals) and Otis Redding III (guitar) together with Mark Lockett (drums, keys, and lead vocal)."
