My kids(& I) love to play Mario Kart for Wii, but lately we have been getting an "unable to read disk" error. It is spotty as sometimes it plays and others it doesn't. All other disks work fine. If I reset the Wii then most times it will play, but after a race or two it will give the error. There doesn't seem to be any scratches on it. There is some info on the web about this game, but mostly problems in Japan. Does anybody else have this problem, and are there any ideas how to fix (ie. disk cleaners, store return ideas, manufacturer claims) or do I bite the bullet and shell out another $50?

Thanks in advance.

This has been a known issue for a while. Some dual-layer disks have problems being read due to a dirty lazer lens.

Do a web search for it.

It is the dual layer disks. Send Nintendo an e-mail. They are probably the easiest people to deal with.

The problem is when the laser lens getting dirty.

If you're a smoker there's a higher probablility of it becoming an issue.

Also, using the stand to hold the Wii in a vertical position may help prevent this problem.

thx-

I'l put it on its side and take the cigarettes away from my kids.

Better take their crack, meth, and weed too. :p
I told them to stay away from crack, the meth they shoot up and the weed is in the rice crispy treats, so the wii should be safe.

If i could just cut down on their horse habit ,then Id be happy.;)

Make sure there's no fingerprints on the disc. Always wipe from the center out, not in a circular motion on the disc.

That horse hair can be brutal on a fan...

I contacted Nintendo and they want me to send in both the disk and the Wii for evaluation. They said there is a protocall (sp) for this game, so others may have had it happen also. I will try the Wii lens cleaning kit first before I send everything in. I don't smoke but there is a fireplace in the room that we use. I wonder if that has an effect?

Just got my Wii and Mario Kart back and everything works great. Nintendo IS the easiest company to work with. No charge at all to me. Even got a new Mario Kart disk. They replaced the hard drive mechanism and cleaned and tested the console. It took about 10 days from the time I sent it in to get everything back.
