    Mutual Of New York (MONY) Insurance Company building? Tommy James (of Tommy James & the Shondells) could see the sign from his apartment and inspired him to write MONY MONY. However, this song was a hit in 1968 so I think I'm wrong...

    The answer was indeed the Edmund Fitzgerald, named for the former president of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance company, which owned the ship.
