KLSX will drop talk radio format to play Top 40 music | cbs, radio, amp, jack, format - Entertainment - OCRegister.com

Talk KLSX/97.1 FM will flip to a new Top 40 format called "AMP RADIO" at 5 p.m. Friday, CBS announced Wednesday.

Current talk show hosts Adam Carolla, the team of Frosty, Heidi & Frank, and Tom Leykis will do their final shows live Friday, with Leykis tossing the switch at 5 p.m. to "AMP RADIO," which will begin with 10,000 songs in a row with limited commercial interruption "or about 28 days of just full-on music," according to Dan Weiner, senior vice president and market manager for CBS radio in Los Angeles.

It finally happened. Once Stern left the station plummeted in the ratings. This has been rumored for half a year now but it's finally happening.

Yet another Top 40 radio station in Los Angeles? Time to take 97.1 off my car preset. Apparently that's what most people did when Stern went off air in 2005.

Both Adam and Tom would be great additions to SiriusXM, I know there isn't a lot of cash right now, but maybe a weekend gig or vacation fill-ins. Too bad this didn't happen last December or we would have had a great alternative to "Bubba lite"!

The economy is so bad, people can't even afford to listen to FREE radio...

Maybe Adam will come looking for a job now.

10,000 songs with 'limited commercial interuptions'? Then they really sock it on I guess. It used to be with format switches you got some period of time commercial free.

It would be great to get leykis and carolla on SXM. Hell, with the money they could save by canning Oprah and/or Martha, they could hire these guys and have some cash left over! Well maybe not cash, but at least a little less debt!

It will be sad to take 97.1 off my presets. I've spent countless hours listening since 1992 when I discovered Howard, and I still tune in every now and then to catch some Leykis. It was actually a well-programmed FM talk station. Too bad that nobody listens anymore.

I think if Carolla or Leykis dont get on Sirius XM that for one Carolla would probably be reunited with Kimmel on his show while Leykis could get a show on HLN or MSNBC . It wouldnt be 4 hours a day of talk but at least they would still have a platform to be on.

I would not be surprised if some of the KLSX personalities end up on Sirius.

That's why the way to go on those was the podcasts. Two and half hours of no commercials.

That said, I hope he turns up on Howard 101 so that they can have some uncensored radio in the afternoon.

Adam is hysterical. I've been pounding on the drum for three years...I'm hoping now will be his time to come to satellite.

The possibility of the talent from that station going to SIRIUS XM makes me happy. But I don't know if that is possible. Carolla sure, but Leykis still has some big syndicated markets like Seattle and Dallas, or at least I think so.

This also makes me soo sad. This is the station that got me into talk radio, and Howard Stern. If KLSX never had talk or Stern I would have never started TSS.

I think the personalities on that format became more and more handcuffed from management and pressure from what I've heard. I think without those petty limits they would be quite entertaining on Satellite.

As a matter of fact, Westwood One canned Leykis altogether; very few stations carried him at all.

One reason for KLSX's flip to CHR could be because CBS wants to take a nip out of KIIS's ratings. That way, KROQ could increase their chances of being top dog in the market.

I think it's because years ago, his show was mostly political. Even a few Rush affiliates carried him. However, he started talking more and more about boobs and those stations canned him for more political talk.

However, I think fine food show on the weekends, The Tasting Room is still intact.

Adam Carolla rips KLSX's change in format
Web link to original article here.

KLSX morning talk show host Adam Carolla riffed on what he called the sad state of Los Angeles radio on the penultimate show Thursday for the station, which on Friday will replace its all-talk platform with a Top 40 format geared to younger listeners. As previously reported, KLSX-FM (97.1) will cease to exist in its current state at 5 p.m. Friday.

Carolla didn't mince words when discussing the changeover. “All you’re going to hear on L.A. radio now is ranchera music and Top 40,” he said.

He denounced the state of local radio, where “now you’ll hear more Justin Timberlake and Rihanna.”

Carolla also said he understood the decision by the station’s parent company, CBS Radio, to be a business one. “I don’t take this personally. I have nothing bad to say about CBS.”

Carolla also announced Thursday that he would start podcasting "The Adam Carolla Show" beginning Monday at adamcarolla.com.

The Times will file more on the station's format change this week.

Frank Kramer just announced today that all the employees at KLSX agreed to take a pay cut to save the format, but Tom Leykis rejected it, and that's why the station is flipping formats.

Frank Kramer just announced today that all the employees at KLSX agreed to take a pay cut to save the format, but Tom Leykis rejected it, and that's why the station is flipping formats.

Tom's response to that was classic, saying he could sue and own him.

Did you hear Frosty, Heidi and Frank sign off today? That was nothing but a cryfest and no one could even speak.
