A friend called to say that Sirius is planning to increase subscription prices in the near future. I Googled, and found that he was correct. There are several stories floating around that the Internet service (currently free with a sub) will now cost an additional $3.00 a month. Additional subs would cost more as well, unless you lock into a long term deal.

I guess Mel must have been misinformed when he was talking about the merger not affecting the prices in any way.

I wonder if everyone will go along with the change?

My prediction is many will cancel, and those who have not signed up yet now will certainly not due to the price increase.

What does everyone think?

I don't understand the bit about the "increase" for the internet access; they have always charged for their "premium" online access (128k); I had been paying for the online content for a year before I canceled. The "regular" access has been free, though. So really, its not an increase for internet service, they just aren't offering the free version anymore.

What is really short-sighted is not offering an Iphone SiriXM app. There was an article about that fact in the WSJ. SiriXM's attitude is, "we're not interested in that revenue stream"(!). Mel's got to go. He's too old to understand the nuances of new media. They need new, young blood that gets the post modern, post-radio world.

Update

I just called Sirius customer service and the nice lady confirmed the rumor, only she said the March price increase will be $3.99, not $2.99 as I originally reported. This could be the final straw for Sirius. Raising prices for a luxury service in an economically depressed time probably isn't the best move. Fiddlesticks!

Which just means people have to pay for a service formerly free, under the guise of it being "better." That pitch sounds familiar, doesn't it? LOL

There not changing the main monthly service fees so as someone posted in another this is a loophole they're using to charge more money.
It sucks. I'm down to one sub anyways but I'll probably pay of internet access since I listen all day at work.:(
