You observant DRC members may notice that these new threads get created every 2 years. I made my last payment on my S8, which was $17.50/mo after the $300 discount from Best Buy. So I was eligible for an upgrade, however, I didn't feel like I needed one, and all the new S10's and Notes are ridiculously expensive.

My daughter has a J7 that didn't work so great. She had 8 $10 payments left on that, so I was going to let her use my upgrade. But then I realized she'd have 2 monthly payments, and even though I'd have no payments, I'm not going to pay her phone for her.

I came across a better solution. Best Buy had a deal on the S9, regularly $25/mo, now just $16.66/mo ($200 off). That's less than I'm paying now, and for a brand new phone. Mrs Scotch has the S9, and it's good; better camera, bigger battery, and otherwise just like the S8. So I upgraded myself to the S9, and gave the kid my S8. An appropriately pimply-faced boy did all the setup and data transfers for us last night. She can use my old S8 for 8 months, make payments on the J7 she's not using, then do what she wants after that.

So I got the new S9, but all day today it was doing system updates. Not just one, but 10 or 12. And every installed app has updates available. Kind of crazy.

I'm not sure what the S10 would have that's better than the S9. I think it has multiple camera lenses, but I got a Nikon B500 with 40x zoom, so I don't need a zoom on my phone. The S10 has a fractionally larger screen, and is a hair longer/wider, but a hair thinner. It's got a newer processor, but I've never had any lag on the S8, so I don't imagine the S9 would be any different. I'm not a cell phone gamer. The discounted S9 was $400, they offer the same discount on the basic S10 ($700 after discount) and 5G S10 ($1,100 after discount). And you can pay more - the Note 10+ 5G is $1,400. As I said before, I'm not an early adopter, I'm a late adopter.

Enjoy the new phone.

That seems like a lot of updates, but I'm assuming that it'll slow down.
I'm still digging my Note 9. It's a good phone.

The system updates seem to be done, but when I charge on my home wifi, it goes ahead and updates apps. It did 17, then another 12. And that's on top of the 5 or 6 I initiated myself. But those updates are not obtrusive.

I installed a 64g micro SD in it, on top of the 64g built-in. So I should be able to have all my music on it, and backup pics & videos. So far, I like the phone. It's coral blue, and I have a clear case on it. It's definitely heavier than my S8.
