Free agency starting soon made me think of this. Lets say you make 4 million a year playing for a good team that has a good chance to win a championship. You are a Pro-Bowler and other teams are offering you 14 million, and your team is offering you 10 million a year.

Now, the Lions or the Redskins are offering to pay you 14 million a year for 5 years, but your team, that went 13-3 last year and remains largely unchanged, is only offering 10 million a year for 4 years. So, do you stay with a 40 million dollar contract and a good chance of getting that ring? Or do you jump to a 70 million dollar contract with very little chance of ever even winning your division?

I'm not a millionare and will never be one. I will probably be luck to make 2 million in my lifetime. If it were up to me I would take the 40 million and the chance for a Super Bowl ring,

I'd want to win the ring at all costs. I'm sure it's easier said than done, but I can see opting for the lesser contract with the better team.

Winning the Super Bowl ring would be fantastic, but I rather play for the money as long I play healthy and make the starting roster.

There's another way to look at it too. A marquee player might be inclined to go to a team known for losing with the motivation of turning it around. They just might get a nice contract to go along with it too.

I'm reminded of Adrian Wilson of the Cardinals. He had plenty of opportunities to leave the franchise, but he said he was stubborn and wanted to stick around to help turn the team around.

By the way, blyons, I don't suppose you're talking about Albert Haynesworth are you?

You got me! I was talking about Haynesworth, but also other players around the league who have a big decision between a chance for a ring vs a payday with a loser. I don't think winning teams are gonna shell out a lot for free agents, since what they have is obviously working. I don't know, but the way I look at it, if I had 15 mil in the bank and guaranteed 40 million more, I would take less to get that ring. Remember that ring can be the difference between Hall of Fame glory, or being forgotten. That is especially true of defensive players. Though if Haynesworth is more interested in the money than winning games, I don't want him on my team.

I agree, I think the ring is worth a lot more than the money. Hey, get the ring then go for the huge payday!

Haha, yeah figured you were.

I doubt they'll be much of a player in the Haynesworth sweepstakes, but I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Texan jersey lined up next to Super Mario next year. Imagine being an opposing QB and looking across the line at those two...scary stuff. But, Houston enjoys being mediocre it seems, so why would they have any interest in Haynesworth? Oh well...
