ONEderland playlist

Channel98

Don't yell or hit.
ONEderland, SiriusXM 702, plays songs by “artists who had one big hit that stood the test of time.” Many of these artists – Snow, Falco, Kelis, Rockwell, Stacey Q, Timmy T., Young MC, Vanilla Ice, Craig Mack, C.W. McCall, Gary Glitter, Eddie Murphy, Thelma Houston, Vanessa Carlton, Matthew Wilder, Eddy Grant, Alannah Myles, Rachel Platten, Rickie Lee Jones, Maria Muldaur, Michael Sembello, Jermaine Stewart, Natalie Imbruglia, Jay Ferguson, Edwin McCain, Chilliwack, Exile, Fastball, Hinder, Jigsaw, Madness, Hues Corporation, Club Nouveau, Con Funk Shun, Digital Underground, Dream Academy, Edward Bear, Londonbeat, No Mercy, Was (Not Was), Til Tuesday, Tommy Tutone, Soul Asylum, Stealers Wheel, Swing Out Sister, Stereo MC’s, 69 Boyz, Los Del Rio, Boy Meets Girl, Brownsville Station, Andrea True Connection, Five Man Electrical Band, Men Without Hats, Love Unlimited Orchestra and the Tubes – had a second top-40 hit. Katrina & The Waves had two other top-40 hits. John Waite, Lisa Loeb, Quarterflash and Del Amitri each had two other songs that made the top 20. Kris Kross had three other songs that made the top 20! Apparently none of these other songs “stood the test of time.”

Here is a 400-song sample of the playlist. United States Of Whatever did not make the Hot 100 but reached #34 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. Woo Hoo did not chart but was included on the soundtrack album of the martial arts film Kill Bill, Volume 1 in 2003.

A lot of these artists have been debunked as OHW in the OHW thread. Chilliwack has several hits for example which I still hear today. Men Without Hats had 2 huge hits both of which are heard today. As a matter of fact their second hit "Pop Goes The World" I hear more. Granted this is a Canadian perspective but still.

And a few of these artists didn't even have the "one big hit" that would qualify them for the channel's playlist,. Modjo's Lady (Hear Me Tonight) peaked at #81. Kurtis Blow's The Breaks peaked at #87. Linday Lohan's Rumors stalled at #106 in December 2004 – and a year later she reached #57 with Confessions Of A Broken Heart. But chart performance doesn't necessarily mean a song will stand "the test of time." In 2020 Billboard declared Rumors to be Lohan's "most essential song."

Just because it's her most essential song doesn't mean it is a hit or any good. Stalling when it was released at 106 or 57 pretty much means it was not a hit. Now if it was big on another chart or charted later due to an appearance on "Stranger Things" that is different.

Rumors reached #27 on Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 chart for the week ending November 27, 2004. Her onl;y other song to appear on that chart was Over, which debuted at #39 for the week ending March 5, 2005 – and dropped off the chart the following week.

Love that song! But yeah, not a hit by any stretch of the imagination. Not even a bubbling under.

Apparently none of these other songs “stood the test of time.”
