...

hey there all...

New to the boards here, new to the slacker portable G1 device from Woot recently.

Have read all the FAQs, done my homework (hopefully diligently...) and still got questions...

Did the minimal stations, refresh them, get the latest software download. Did all that.

Re-added stations (twenty-some) and now trying to refresh the new set.

Is it supposed to be stuck on:

"Selecting New Songs --- Slacker is now selecting the best new songs for your radio stations."

... for literally ever..?!? Hours so far..??

Or is it hung up..??

I saw what the true refresh looked like earlier, with the progress bar, 1 of 2, etc...

Connection is good, says it is connected to Slacker.

So is it really doing anything..?? Or do I need to try it again..??

Just curious.

I certainly do agree with all the talk of how the software on this thing really sucks. Totally agree. Certainly not user-friendly.

Anyway . . .just politely asking for tips and advice. What say you..??

The software on these players is definitely a litle buggy. It should definitely not be taking that long to sync. Try cancelling, turning off the player, taking the battery out putting it back in and trying again. I don't know if the G1 has a similar problem, but the G2 will sometimes get confused and get stuck logged in, not allowing you to do a refresh until you restart it after you've done one already. A reboot usally fixes it.

Give that a try, if it doesn't work maybe one of our members with a G1 will be able to help out.

Uhmmm ... not exactly sure where it comes out at. I assume the apparent cover on the lower back is it. But no obvious slot to remove it. I am reluctant to do that without further advice from a G1 user.

I will try turning it off and a factory reset again if needed.

Frustrating . . .especially when I know how well it works ... when it does work.

Sorry. Like I said I haven't actually used a G1, so I was just basically mentioning the easy stuff that people at the Slacker forum usualy mention. I only say to take the battery out because that way you know the device has fully reset itself and not just gone to sleep (which is where the problem with the G2 lies, it gets stuck thinking it's always connected until it powers down).

Like I said, we have a few people here that have G1s, and they should be able to help you a bit more than I can. just know that once you get by the initial headaches, it's a great service, and it's totally worth it dealing with the growing pains.

No problem.

I certainly came across many of your helpful posts while I was reading through earlier here. I really appreciate your help with my problem(s).

Right now I got it up and refreshing '1 of 24'.. Hopefully that is not too many..!!

Thanks again.

It is going to take several hours to download all those stations. When you have 24 stations being downloaded it can stay at the selecting songs for up to 20 minutes. It also depends on your connection speed. I have an 8mpbs download speed at home and it takes a good 15 to 20 minutes per station to download.

The problem with the G1, which I do have is that unlike the G2 there is no ability to go into the menu and do a restart. The only way you can get a full restart is to allow it to sit for 6 hours idle and it will auto shut off or you can remove the battery.

The G1 and G2 both suffer from an issue where for whatever reason the device doesn't realize that it has disconnected from the server so you'll sometimes get to the signing on screen where it will just sit. However, you were getting beyond that to selecting songs, so you were signed in and that selection of songs does sometimes take a while.

hey there again...

Oh well ... at least I was able to get a few stations on it. Actually 20-some eventually loaded before it seemed to stop loading.

Every time since then (after the software/firmware update) it has not successfully connected to the site. Either USB or wireless...

Wonderful product with a crap delivery system.

So this six hour wait idea. Does it have to be isolated from the wireless signal while it is doing this 'proto-restart'..?? Or will just shutting it off and leaving it alone on the counter be enough. It does not seem to have worked yet.

And I am still reluctant to crack the back and take the battery out. Seems kinda radical to me . . .and yes, I have been into the case of my desktop.

Anyway. Way too frustrating compared to how great it should be.

Anyone else got any ideas/suggestions . . .I am all ears...

.

if you use a straightened paperclip and put it into the hole on the back it releases a little spring and the cover comes right off. The release switch is deeper than you might think.

I just popped mine off a few times before i figured out the right way, w/o harm.
