Other then Casual Fan, who owns an iPod Shuffle? Who'd spend the dough on expensive headphones and not buy a better iPod?...:right:

Yes, it's dumb, but at least it's not the more High End iPods...:)

I am sure that they'll add this "feature" to the higher end products as they refresh them. I look forward to the press release that states that the authentication chip actually protects consumers.

I imagine if they do it, it will be very short lived. There would be a fairly major revolt if that were to happen. I wonder if this is coming from Jobs himself or some low end geek in product development. Then again of you think about it, it's not much different than no universal car or home docks from the satellite radio people.

I'm glad they moved the controls to the cord because the iPod Shuffle was so big and unwieldy with them built into the device itself. The article I read says these controls work on other models so its not far-fetched that the chip requirement will expand.

It sounds like an Apple-branded thumbdrive...

Well don't be surprised if they don't do this on the higher end products on their next releases. Usually they start out with the low end products and then move it forward to the higher end products.

Their proprietary protectionist ways are truly a turn off to me! This is the reason I still have the first gen iPod Touch! I will use it as long as it will work with no intent to upgrade. But like all their products at some point they will simply stop providing updates for the first gen basically forcing you to upgrade to keep up. Apple truly is a cut throat company and WE are the reason they can get away with this crap. Until we all wise up and quit buying their products that add these restrictions, then they will continue to push it forward.

i look at this as being a test for such a move with the
higher priced pods

if they included a control cable you could plug in your own phones into it would be better.

They're making a dongle with controls that you can plug any headphones into. Only $20 or 1/3rd the price of the whole device, since its just a memory stick with a clip...
