Response to the first two editions of 'musical challenge' has been good. Let's try another!
This week, we are looking for "bodies of water" mentioned specifically in song lyrics (or titles). Lakes, rivers, oceans, etc.

Examples:

"Up on Cripple Creek" - The Band - Straight down the Mississippi River, to the Gulf of Mexico

"Green River" - Creedence Clearwater Revival - The song is about Putah Creek located near Winters, CA

"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" - Gordon Lightfoot - Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee; The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay; Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
And farther below, Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her

"Heart of the Night" - Poco - Shining down on the Pontchartrain

Good luck!
:)

I love that song too, but I would say it doesn't count. :right:
The lyrics don't mention any waterways in particular.

Interesting wiki on that one, btw.
:)

How about Chuck Berry/Johnny Rivers, Memphis, Tennessee?...

Help me, information, get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who'd call me here from Memphis Tennessee
Her home is on the south side, high upon a ridge
Just a half a mile from the Mississippi bridge

Wow. This is a tough one. Only a few come to mind immediately, will have to sleep on it (or have it keep me awake all night!)

Cuyahoga - R.E.M. (the river that burned in Cleveland)

Lets put our heads together, start a new country up,
Underneath the river bed we burned the river down.
This is where they walked, swam, hunted, danced and sang,
Take a picture here, take a souvenir
Cuyahoga
Cuyahoga, gone

Atlantic - Keane (opener from Under the Iron Sea)

Generic references:

The ocean - Led Zep
Sold me down the river - The Alarm
Hole in the river - Crowded House
Find the river - R.E.M.

Okkervil River (the band, a XMU favorite)

I don't have any country on my iPod, so probably missing out on a lot of "river" songs.

hop on a flight to miami beach or hollywood
I'm taking a greyhood on the hudson river line
I'm in a new york state of mind" :note: :heat:

Allan Jackson -- "Chattahoochee"

Yeah way down yonder on the Chattahoochee
Never knew how much that muddy water meant to me
But I learned how to swim and I learned who I was
A lot about livin' and a little 'bout love

"Stuck Between Stations" by the Hold Steady
The devil and John Berryman
Took a walk together.
They ended up on Washington
Talking to the river.

These Twin Cities kisses
Sound like clicks and hisses.
We all tumbled down and
Drowned in the Mississippi River.

I'm pretty sure this doesn't count because the lake in question may or may not exist:
"Lake of Fire" by the Meat Puppets
Where do bad folks go when they die?
They don't go to heaven where the angels fly.
They go to the lake of fire and fry.
Won't see 'em again until the fourth of July.

"River Euphrates" by the Pixies (two bodies of water in this one)
Ride the tire down
River Euphrates
Let's ride the tire down

Dead sea make it float
One sip from the salty wine
Dead sea make you choke

"The Broad Majestic Shannon" by the Pogues, about the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland.
So I walked as day was dawning
Where small birds sang and leaves were falling
Where we once watched the row boats landing
By the broad majestic Shannon

"Tennessee Blues" by Steve Earle
Blue dog on my floorboard, redhead by my side
Cross the mighty Hudson river to the New York City side

That's all I got right now, but I'll probably find more.
