It is very symbolic to the victims, but it's really meaningless.

It basically tells Madoff that we (the government) are done with you and will be going after your family now.

If the government was interested in negotiating and working with Madoff, they would have sentenced him to something like 40-50 years and told him that the more information he shares, the more likely you'll see daylight again before you die.

In any case, it really does nothing for the victims.

Rev up old sparky. If he's never going to see blue skies again, let's just cut to the chase, nix the appeals, and call it a day. Why pay for all of his old age medical expenses and 3 hots and a cot, if he's just being warehoused.

I would think he'll be somewhere in between. Not a country club, but not a supermax. Maybe a medium security sort of thing. I doubt he'll be getting pounded in the shower...but I bet a few victims would love to see that happen.
